Alex Sceberras Trigona’s article (August 8), which Labour leader Joseph Muscat described as “academic”, to me and many others is nothing but shameful.

If there is anyone who can lecture us about democracy, I am sure it is not this former Labour foreign minister (1981-87).

Not only was he a minister in a government governing against the will of the majority of the voters, but he also served in a Cabinet headed by a prime minister who had never even contested an election.

Dr Sceberras Trigona was the architect of the infamous agreement with North Korea to supply us with arms and security advisers to teach the regime how to deal with political opposition.

The ‘non-alignment’ farce was conveniently forgotten then. Indeed the North Korean dictator Kim Il-Sung was repaid with Malta’s highest decoration.

Although the past is past, and we hope it will never return, nobody can be so sure seeing how the new Labour leader has embraced the old guard back into the fold.

Dr Sceberras Trigona not only returned to the fold but also managed to gain the post of party international secretary, a role occupied for many years by lawyer Joe Mifsud, who has since become a target of Labour attacks.

I think Dr Sceberras Trigona is expecting to be made foreign minister again in a new Labour administration. I hope the PL will not regret bringing back the old guard.
