A seven-year-old girl was rescued and ferried to hospital by helicopter this afternoon after a cabin cruiser sank between L-ahrax and Comino.
Informed sources said the girld's life was saved by emergency CPR administered by a doctor who had been on a nearby boat. The girl resumed breathing and was hoisted on board the Alouette helicopter and transferred to hospital within minutes.
During the same rescue a man was ferried to Marfa where first aid was administered by an ambulance crew. His condition is not serious.
The incident happened at about 5.30 p.m.
Five other persons were rescued unharmed by a patrol boat

You stated that why isn't there a helipad at Mater Dei and that patients are transferred by ambulance from the helipad at St Luke's? Its been operational from day one and has been used several times whenever the need arose to transfer patients by helicopter to Mater Dei.
There is indeed a helipad at Mater Dei just across from Casualty Dept and the Morgue.

According to Salv Azzopardi, the helipad at Mater Dei has been closed off for months and that St Luke's helipad is being used.
If indeed this is so, then there must be a sound technical reason that has compelled the authorities to take this decision. Wonder what? Perhaps someone can enlighten us on this.

Thank God the girl was saved.
Shouldn't she have been wearing a lifevest as all children on boats should? This rule should be strictly adhered to to avoid any such accidents.

Just like all children should sit at the back in cars and wear seatbelts, and yet you still see a number of children standing up between their parents' seats......and just like one should not answer calls while driving and yet everywhere you look you will see drivers talking on mobiles (some of them even texting). It's a cultural flaw that we have not yet shed as a nation, as most people who hear about these accidents due to negligence, still adopt the mentality of "It will not happen to me".......until it does.

People become very careless especially in Summer. Not to take any Credit but i also have saved a person from certain painful death this Summer.
I happened to be the only person on this pontoon in a Marina one evening when i heard certain bangs on a boat. After more bangs i realised that someone got stuck in an airless tiny compartment on a sailing boat. Hadn't i taken notice he would have been found dead days later since the owner is a foreigner and so he does not frequent his boat that often and in this August heat , it would have taken a very short time to loose consciousness and certain death.
This saved person should know better actually, since he presents himself as a captain..........

Let's teach CPR at school as a subject. This can save lives.

Unfortunate that these things happen, but it is also fortunate that we have dedicated persons who are professionals in their work and take pride in what they do. A very merited well done. At least it is not all bad news, sometimes good things come out of a bad situation. God bless the people who put their life on the line for others.

Completely agree!
I have done the first aid course and I agree that everyone should know first aid. It can save a life.
I can't understand why senior school children are loaded with curriculum activities and simple life saving knowledge is not considered important. It must be included in every senior school. Every school leaving teenager must know First Aid.

This is fantastic! It does highlight the fact though, that as many people as possible need to be trained in First Aid and CPR. It would be ideal if these were included in the national curriculum and taught in schools, colleges and university.

Well done to all involved - it enhances the idea of teaching first aid at all levels in cumpulsory education.
I also encourage people especially teenagers to take FIRST AID COURSES during the summer holidays with NGOs like RED CROSS MALTA etc.

These people are true heroes, they make us all proud. There is nothing more rewarding than saving someone's life, and whoever owes their lives to them will remain indebted to them for the rest of his or her life. The AFM Marine saved my son's life from a certain death 2 years ago, and I will be forever indebted to them.
Same goes to that doctor that resuscitated this girl, she owes her life to him, he must be very proud as well.

These are the heroes on this planet, so selfless and there is no way to fully repay them.
All those involved in saving lives.....thank you.

If only our Politicians and Judiciary were made of the same fibre as our CP, Armed Forces and a good percentage of our Police Force we would be living in a dream country. Unfortunately they are not.

I just hope that this will get the same amount of publicity that the sham in Marsaxlokk did. And for those who said they are ashamed of being Maltese because of a few undesireables, well, how about showing some pride in these rescuers? I am proud to be Maltese, because I get to meet so many who make me feel so positive about my country. Will this story get international coverage as well? I doubt it. These stories are never given any importance.

I wish a speedy recovery to the girl and also would like to say a 'Well Done' to all those involved in the rescue.
But, I ask, why is there no heliport at Mater Dei????
The transfer from St Lukes, where it seems there is a heliport, to Mater Dei by ambulance might be fatal in such emergencies.

The Civil Protection Department, Armed Forces and the Emergency Services are the pride of Malta.
Once I had the opportunity to ask one a fireman, why do you risk your life to save others. His reply was, when you save a person from danger, and you manage to get him out of there, still breathing, although in pain, he looks at you and with his eyes staring directly to your eyes, no words are needed but that person would be trying to tell you ... 'Thank You, You Saved Me' is the answer why I do this job!
Keep it up!

i agree with you mr frendo,
however people must start to co-operate with such professionals. One cannot mention that crowd control on the site of an incident is non existent. Why do 20 people have to stare at the injured person when they can do nothing but hinder the rescue operation.
recently i saw as scene where a patient was being transferred in a very critically condition, only to notice that the poor ambulance nurse had to pass from a bunch of people all starring doing nothing, More over the ambulance staff had to explain the relatives that it was impossible to take all the realities in the ambulance!!
People should start to co-operate.
