Stamps, book mark Santa Marija Convoy
Maltapost last Friday issued a set of stamps to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Santa Marija Convoy.
The stamps depict the vessels that took part in Operation Pedestal.
The convoy consisted of 13 freighters and a tanker escorted by four aircraft carriers, two battleships, seven cruisers, 33 destroyers and a number of supporting ships.
The set, titled ‘70th Anniversary Operation Pedestal – 1942-2012’, was designed by Cedric Galea Pirotta and is in 11 sheets, each with eight different stamps. Each stamp measures 44mm by 31mm and has a perforation of 13.9 x 14.0 (comb.) bearing the Maltese Cross watermark.
Midsea Books, in collaboration with Maltapost, published a large-format 96-page book, entitled Operation Pedestal the Story of the Santa Marija Convoy, by John A. Mizzi to coincide with the anniversary.
The book recounts graphically the course of Operation Pedestal and the various episodes of gallantry.
It includes more than 300 photographs of the convoy.
The stamps and the book are available from all post offices.

Very nice stamps, but why the value of each stamp is 26 cents? Why all stamps issued by Maltapost are so expensive? This is putting young people off collecting stamps. All Maltapost is after is profit, profit and more profit.
