Azeri wrestling success: Toghrul Asgarov of Azerbaijan won the Olympic men’s 60kg freestyle wrestling gold medal yesterday, defeating world champion Besik Kudukhov of Russia in the final. Asgarov, who won this year’s European Championships , does not turn 20 until September. But he dominated the final, winning the first period and then producing a pick-up and drive to take control of the second as he was roared on by the large contingent of Azerbaijani fans at the Excel to a 3-0 win. Bronze medals went to Coleman Scott of the United States and India’s Yogeshwar Dutt, the Asian champion.
Boxing title for Campbell: Britain’s Luke Campbell won the men’s Olympic bantamweight (56kg) gold yesterday with a 14-11 win over Ireland’s John Joe Nevin to claim Britain’s second boxing title of the London Games. Having lost in the semi-finals, Cuba’s Lazaro Alvarez and Japan’s Satoshi Shimizu won bronze medals. After Nicola Adams won the women’s flyweight final on Thursday, this was Great Britain’s second boxing gold of the Games. “It’s a dream come true,” said the 24-year-old Campbell from Hull, England.
Czech wins pentathlon: Czech Republic military officer David Svoboda won the centenary edition of the men's modern pentathlon at the London Olympics. The 27-year-old Svoboda finished the concluding running and shooting phase of the gruelling five-leg event clear of China's Cao Zhongrong, with Hungary's Adam Marosi taking the bronze medal.
Korean military escape: South Korea’s football players celebrated with extra relish after their 2-0 defeat of Japan in Friday’s Olympic bronze medal match earned them exemption from military service. The South Korean authorities had promised to spare the squad a stint in the armed forces – which is usually obligatory – if they secured the bronze medal, and they successfully completed their mission in Cardiff.
Syrian fails dope test: Syrian 400m hurdles runner Ghfran Almouhamad has tested positive for the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine and dis-qualified from the Olympics, the IOC said. Almouhamad, 23, was tested on August 3, two days before she finished eighth in her first round heat.
