Moral obligation to karozzin horses (3)
I have been a regular visitor to Malta for many many years and have always found that the horses based in Valletta were badly treated. This year, when visiting, the temperatures seemed to be hotter than usual for June and I found on visiting the cruise terminal that the horses were covered in flies, had no water, and left in no shade during the hottest part of the day. This can’t be right.
The Maltese people are caring people, why do they treat their working horses the why they do? Surely the government of Malta should be fining the owners for not supplying the horses with basic needs? How would they like to be without water in the blazing sun? I hope when I return, I will find the owners have been forced to take responsibility for their animals.
Tourists from the cruise ships should boycott rides in the carriages until something is done about the horses. Maybe then with their income in doubt they might just have consciences.
Editorial note: A horse shelter at the cruise liner terminal is now in place.

Barbara it is a simple case of supply and demand. The tourists create the demand and the karozzin owners supply the answer to that demand. The owners don't care as they are making a living and if the horse dies, so what they can get another one. It is up to every tourist visiting Malta to boycott these karozzin until such times as proper shelter and water provisions are made.

I think enough has been said, in today's and other editions for everybody concerned to have been made aware of the problem. If it's not the administration's responsibility to build the shelters then it is certainly in position to ensure/cajole/legislate that it be done. Failing that it can suspend all licenses until the weather cools off. Of course the authorities must have the will to actually take action. Either that, or for stronger language, refer back to Mr Clews' Italian insult letter of a few days ago to find a better description of what's needed.

The Authorities in Malta have no shame ; they are immoral & venal .caring only for their own comfort & profit. The Irony is that they are mainly Catholic; which should mean that they show mercy to animals, but of course animals cannot vote or go on strike, so as long as they can ignore the problem they will.We all say shame on them ; but of course they do not care!Of course the horse owners are even worse, which is astounding as the horses earn them their wages.
