An eight-week school waste recycling campaign conducted in 30 schools run by Green MT, the national waste packaging compliance scheme, yielded over 70 tons of recyclable waste.

St Francis School, Birkirkara, won a competition forming part of the campaign, after it collected over 14 tons of recyclable materials.

St Paul’s Bay Primary School came second, although it collected the highest volume of material – just over 27 tons. Verdala Boys College placed third.

During an event held to give awards at St Paul’s Bay primary school, each of the 800 participating students were given a party pack and over 50 gifts were distributed. Malta’s Eurovision singer Kurt Calleja made a surprise appearance and singer Kristina Casolani closed the event.

Green MT CEO Joe Attard said the campaign, called ‘Go Green Man’, would continue in the next scholastic year and he hoped 60 other schools and colleges would take part.

Describing the campaign as “an investment for years to come” he said “we owe it to future generations to leave our environment better then we found it”.
