Diane Borg has been chosen by the Maltese Olympic Committee to carry the flag at tomorrow’s closing ceremony inside east London’s Olympic Stadium.

The 21-year-old sprinter has been given the honour of leading the Maltese contingent in the grand finale to the highly-successful Games after her creditable showing in the women’s 100m event.

The country’s flag-bearer at the closing ceremony in Beijing four years ago was swimmer Ryan Gambin.

Borg did well to progress from the preliminary round when clocking a time of 12.00 seconds to finish third in her heat and seventh overall from 33 runners at the opening round of the competition.

In the first round proper, Borg was a whisker away from bettering her own national record of 11.89 seconds when she dashed home in 11.92 seconds, just 0.03 of a second off the best time she had set at the Games of the Small States of Europe in Liechtenstein last year.

Double Trap shooter William Chetcuti led the Maltese contingent at a spectacular July 27 opening ceremony, also at the Olympic Stadium.
