It seems that as a nation we only pick up the bad ideas from others and the new Air Malta livery is a case in point. Has Air Malta’s management forgotten the debacle British Airways created a few years ago when they introduced a grotesquely coloured scheme, similar to the proposed Air Malta one, which was in complete conflict with the general characteristics of both the country and the dignified image of a national carrier?
It seems Air Malta is now committing the same mistake. The new colours have little to do with Malta and are more suited to a Caribbean regional airline. If Air Malta wants to compete with these types of carriers then I suggest they do a full transformation and introduce bikini clad air hostesses and Samba music in the cabin. The present livery embracing a white fuselage with two thin blue lines and a tail displaying an eight pointed white cross on a red background is far more dignified, timeless and easily recognisable by passengers and aircraft enthusiasts all over the world.
If Air Malta wants to attract more clients, the carrier should also revise its pricing policy to bring it in line with those of other carriers and offer more incentives to the travel trade and the public to encourage them to use its services. The employees must also be motivated, for if the CEO thinks that at this moment in time they are, then he must be receiving the wrong feedback.
I am completely baffled as to why the authorities are sanctioning this needless squandering of millions to replace an already beautiful, more serious and dignified livery befitting the national carrier of a European country and at a time when the airline is in deep financial crisis.
I feel that in a few months’ time the new livery will become an eyesore and be consigned to the archives of history. Goodbye to the millions of taxpayers’ money flushed down the drain.
