News flash
Valletta. The Armed Forces of Malta intercepted three boatloads of people off Delimara Point in the south of Malta.
This placed the armed forces in an awkward position as the boats were heading not away from but towards Libya.
Another surprise finding was that they were loaded with Maltese who were all seniors of pension age.
Their claim was that they were trying to get to Libya to return to Malta as illegal immigrants and, therefore, be entitled to far more benefits than they were receiving as legitimate Maltese pensioners.
The AFM, it is believed, gave them food, water and fuel and assisted them on their journey south.
We are booking the next boat out; let me know if you want to come too.

A very fine letter written in a humorous manner exposing what the Maltese pensioners are being subjected to when they have paid taxes all their life and what illegal immigrants benefit from in coming to Malta without having paid any taxes.

Mr Alfred Grech your letter made my day.... It also shows how pathetic it is to be a senior citizen in Malta. Of course charity starts at home after queuing up behind the illegal immigrant line.

I sympathize with the group of senior citizens.
If they manage to be recognized as illegal immigrants, they get next day medical appointments (as opposed to next year) and they do not get to wait at the queue.

What a load of drivel! You should be ashamed of yourself perpetuating these racist myths. But as long as you get a giggle eh? You're pathetic.

Jesting apart, you are stretching it a bit are you not, if I may say so, Mr. A Grech?

Worth it isn't it? If I was a senior I would feel quite tempted to do it.
Except that Mr Grech has a couple of factual mistakes. Illegal immigrants do not even have contributory benefits like the Maltese even if they pay NI for years - let alone a pension for seniors. So, no, financially the seniors would be much, much worse.
He also forgets that the seniors would have to spend 18 months is miserable conditions in a detention centre. I'd rather spend them watching TV at home, or at an old people's home where conditions are, let's say, slightly better.
Finally, since it's not that easy to convince the refugee commission that you're seeking asylum from a peaceful democratic country like Malta, they would eventually end up deported to their country of origin - Malta!
Nah, not that worth it after all.

I LOVE this joke. We use it here in the UK where the situation is even worse than in Malta.
It is a serious matter, but when there is nothing you can do about the issue, you'd cry if you didn't laugh.
Your letter cheered me up.
See you all in Feb, when the weather cools down.
