Hodgson names youthful squad

England manager Roy Hodgson has put the emphasis on youth with his squad for the friendly against Italy in Bern on August 15, with John Terry, Wayne Rooney and captain Steven Gerrard among the names left out.

Tottenham Hotspur pair Steven Caulker and Jake Livermore and Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand are called up for the first time, while Man. United’s Michael Carrick receives his first call-up since 2010 and is joined by Old Trafford team-mate Tom Cleverley.

Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy will have another chance to impress after injury ruled him out of Euro 2012.

Goalkeepers: Butland (Birmingham), Hart (Man. City), Ruddy (Norwich).

Defenders: Baines (Everton), Bertrand, Cahill (both Chelsea), Caulker (Tottenham), Jagielka (Everton), Walker (Tottenham).

Midfielders: Carrick, Cleverley (both Man. United), Lampard (Chelsea), Johnson (Man. City), Livermore (Tottenham), Milner (Man. City), Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Rodwell (Everton), Young (Man. United).

Forwards: Carroll (Liverpool), Defoe (Tottenham), Sturridge (Chelsea), Walcott (Arsenal).
