Marsaxlokk restaurateurs offered promenade rights

The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association has welcomed the government's offer of temporary encroachment permits over the Marsaxlokk promenade for restaurateurs but appealed for a permanent solution to the issue.

"The MHRA is satisfied that both the Local Council and Government are now recognising that logic needs to prevail as the solutions being proposed by MHRA members will ultimately ensure a fair and equitable solution," the association said.

"MHRA is supportive of having a pedestrian priority zone along the promenade of Marsaxlokk and that all restaurants along the coast are given a fair opportunity to place tables and chairs throughout the whole day along the promenade," it added.

The association said temporary permits are creating uncertainty and unnecessary tensions – a situation which is far from ideal for entrepreneurs and visitors.

I agree with almost all your points except no.4, sorry that doesn't make sense it would cut off an important road and create unecessary traffic. Those roads are already a maze with one ways etc...

There is a big difference between 'browsing' hawkers' stalls and dodging restaurant tables; but as you say, the seaward side of the promenade should be left free.

WHAT ABOUT MALTESE CITIZENS RIGHTS TO ENJOY A RESTAURANT LUNCH OR DINNER IN OPEN PUBLIC PROPERTY?

You said it John - it is open public property - so you have NO right to enjoy a restaurant lunch or dinner on the promenade. Get a packed lunch and eat it on one of the benches. Then dispose of the left overs in the rubbish bins provided.

John Vella,

No one is arguing about that right but when one right completely obliterates the other right-as is clearly the case here- that is when you have a uneven and unfair situation. There has to be an equal balance.

I think it has spoiled the ambiance of Marsaxlokk; walking along the promenade was a pleasure. Not any more.

@ John Vella

Restaurants are private, profit-making enterprises. They have no right to take over public spaces refurbished out of our taxes.
