Marsaxlokk restaurateurs offered promenade rights
The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association has welcomed the government's offer of temporary encroachment permits over the Marsaxlokk promenade for restaurateurs but appealed for a permanent solution to the issue.
"The MHRA is satisfied that both the Local Council and Government are now recognising that logic needs to prevail as the solutions being proposed by MHRA members will ultimately ensure a fair and equitable solution," the association said.
"MHRA is supportive of having a pedestrian priority zone along the promenade of Marsaxlokk and that all restaurants along the coast are given a fair opportunity to place tables and chairs throughout the whole day along the promenade," it added.
The association said temporary permits are creating uncertainty and unnecessary tensions – a situation which is far from ideal for entrepreneurs and visitors.

Have any of you been abroad!? restaurant with outside tables are the norm....... Why is it that we always have to invent the wheel in this country!

A fee per table could help limit the number of tables. Owners would not have so many excess tables on the promenade that are not needed, taking up all the space

Marsaxlokk promenade or the fisherman’s quay? Do you know that you are discussing about “Xatt is-Sajjieda” which the name speaks for itself? Hawkers, restaurants etc and what about the fishermen for which the quay was specifically built in the 60s...
Stop exploiting our village! Where can we do our nets, fishing line, palms and slabs for the lampuki season? In the largest fishing village in Malta we can barely use the slipways as space is limited with bollards, chairs and tables. How can we load or unload directly from our vehicle to the fishing boat or vice versa? Space is extremely limited.
Marsaxlokk has become like a third world country. Residents and fishermen are not respected. Where are the Health Authorities and the OSHA? Perhaps you are not aware about the peril waiters are facing in repeatedly and dangerously crossing the road to deliver orders to their customers the latter sitting under umbrellas at the “Fisherman’s Quay”? How hygienic it is to deliver foods and beverages passing along traffic and pollution? You have ruined our fishing village and its characteristics. Marsaxlokk has become another Sliema or Marsascala. As if the power station was not enough.

This is NONSENSE.. These restaurant owners even prohibit people from parking in front of their restaurant so that they can freely cross the road with food and empty dishes. The promenade is a place to walk not a place to eat and after all, the restaurants are empty on the inside so it is not like people have nowhere to eat.

Why not simply keep the pavements & promenade clear of all stalls, tables & chairs? Having tables & chairs on the street make the place look very ugly and take up most of the space that's supposed to be for pedestrians.

While I agree that restaurant owners use the promenade....it is suggested the following points:
1. To control the number of tables and an appropriate passage for public use especially those with wheel chairs and push chiars/prams.
2. The MTA should issue guidance the kind of furniture used in the streets, and this service should be offered free of charge but the furniture fully paid by the owners.
3. The complete removal of flood lights....this is a purely light pollution and is not complementing the promenade neither the picturesque ambience.
4. The road at the shoreline should be closed on Saturday evening and the restauranteers will place the tables in the road, adjacent to their restaurants.
5. Complete removal and restriction on the number of tables on the pavement...tables are even placed infront of house doors. Imagine going out from your home and find such scene.
6. Hawkers should be moved from the promenade, place them back on the main road leading to the Power Station.
7. The Marsaxlokk Council to charge a nominal fee of 10euro per stall to clean after the market. This budget is taken from our local coffers and other make profits.
I hope that the above suggestions will be considered and these problems are addressed. As a local citizen who lives at Marsaxlokk must be considered and acknoweldged. Marsaxlokk is not just restaurtants and hawkers but people who pay taxes like any other cistizen who live in Sliema, St. Julians and any other place.
Thank You.

I agree with almost all your points except no.4, sorry that doesn't make sense it would cut off an important road and create unecessary traffic. Those roads are already a maze with one ways etc...

In other civilized countries, markers are placed on the ground to indicate the area allocated to restaurants. Obviously I beleive that they have to pay some sort of rent yearly for using the space. Public is free to walk along the promenade as well. Maltese gemgem

Would it be the same in other localities like neighbouring Birzebbugia, and M'Scala or other places by sea?
This election and this summer head must have gone to our heads BUT everyone should be treated fairly and equitable - no matter the location!!!

A few weeks ago I went there with my kids for a walk. Having to push a pushchair with my 1year old in and controlling my 3 year old is an impossible task in view of all the tables and chairs. We did dine in one of the restaurants there. But I promised I will not go again. So it's the restauraunters loss.

We may be missing the point here. The monti hawkers have incredibly large stalls at M'Xlokk, thus taking up space that could be allocated to other businesses. The area should be shared by all, at a reasonable rent BUT the seaward side of the promenade should be left FREE for pedestrians!
Mr Tony Gatt

There is a big difference between 'browsing' hawkers' stalls and dodging restaurant tables; but as you say, the seaward side of the promenade should be left free.

We paid with our taxes so that the promenade was embellished and now the hungry restaurateurs use the promenade as an extension of their shops. This is utterly unbelievable. They should be made to pay 1000's of euros in rent every year to make up for the space lost by the public. And they grumbled of lost custom when the promenade was being embellished. Qas jisthu!

WHAT ABOUT MALTESE CITIZENS RIGHTS TO ENJOY A RESTAURANT LUNCH OR DINNER IN OPEN PUBLIC PROPERTY?
G Portelli
Aug 9th 2012, 19:09
You said it John - it is open public property - so you have NO right to enjoy a restaurant lunch or dinner on the promenade. Get a packed lunch and eat it on one of the benches. Then dispose of the left overs in the rubbish bins provided.

John Vella,
No one is arguing about that right but when one right completely obliterates the other right-as is clearly the case here- that is when you have a uneven and unfair situation. There has to be an equal balance.

Restaurants are private, profit-making enterprises. They have no right to take over public spaces refurbished out of our taxes.

What a contradiction
"a pedestrian priority zone" and "that all restaurants along the coast are given a fair opportunity to place tables and chairs throughout the whole day along the promenade,"
Pedestrians will have to weave through the chairs as we have to do at the Sliema Ferries.
