Sliema Wanderers will be coached by Italian Alfonso Greco this season following the sudden resignation of Clive Mizzi.

Mizzi, who had only been in charge at the Wanderers two months, stepped down on Tuesday, citing disagreements with the committee over his decision to leave.

In June, the 39-year-old had taken over from Danilo Doncic and put pen to paper on a two-year-contract.

Contacted by The Times yesterday, former Mqabba coach Mizzi said he could not continue with his job due to new developments at the Wanderers.

“I’m disappointed to have ended my association with Sliema this way,” Mizzi said.

“However, lately it became difficult for me to handle the job the way I wanted.

“Last week, for instance, the club filed the registration papers of two Argentine players at the MFA even though I had made it clear that they were not in my plans.

“They also wanted to have two Italians in my technical staff but I objected, with the league starting this month. I informed the club that I was handing in my resignation and they understood my position. In fact, we parted ways amicably.”

The Wanderers yesterday issued a statement confirming the appointment of Greco, a former Lazio and Cagliari player, as Mizzi’s replacement.

They also added that Roberto Causio, a former FIGC employee, will join their technical staff besides giving a strong hint that ‘new strategic partners’ will be involved in the running of the club this season.

“A new full-time technical staff will be headed by sports director Roberto Causio and Alfonso Greco will be Sliema’s new coach,” the statement said.

“The club is in the process of selecting a new assistant coach, physical trainer and goal-keepers’ coach. The latest developments at the club were only made possible through the help of our new strategic partners.”

Useful signing

Valletta reached a deal with Birkirkara for the signature of midfielder Shaun Bajada.

It seems the Citizens had intensified their chase for the 28-year-old Gozitan this summer and agreement with the out-of-contract player was finally reached yesterday.

Bajada is expected to put pen to paper on a long-term contract and could make his first appearance for his new club on Saturday when the Citizens play Cagliari in a friendly in Olbia.

Elsewhere, it was confirmed that Brazilian defender Rodrigo Pereira is no longer on the books of Birkirkara.

The Stripes, however, filled his void with the signing of Spaniard Alejandro Mendoza Coroja, who impressed during a trial this summer.

They also landed the signature of Malta U-21 defender Zach Muscat from Pietà Hotspurs.

Coroja has now become Birkirkara’s fifth overseas player, joining Brazilians Joselito and Jhonnattan, Serbian Nikola Vukanac and Nigerian Shola Haruna Shodiya.
