It upsets most Maltese and tourists that so little has been done for karozzin horses. This issue has been around for years and while decisions are constantly changed, the heat has once again become unbearable, with the horses seen suffering daily.

Non-government organisations joined forces and thousands have signed petitions. Plans for the so-called permanent shelters in various locations seem to have stalled suddenly, as only two shelters have been put up.

It seems that the funds for more shelters have run out. It would only take a modest sum to build temporary shelters for these horses, so what is the problem? Permits to build houses come so much easier, but when it comes to these horses that need protection from the sun and an adequate water supply, the authorities seem not to care.

Unlike humans who can cool off by going swimming or using air-conditioning, these horses start heading for work at the break of day and are subject to the burning sun till late afternoon. The promises for these animals have been far from fulfilled, as there are no proper horse shelters with water throughout Malta.
