A man who allegedly assaulted two police officers at Gnejna yesterday was today granted bail.
The man, Paul Scicluna, 52, of Siggiewi, pleaded not guilty to assaulting and slightly injuring the officers, refusing to hand over his details, disobeying police orders and swearing in public.
Police inspector Edwin Cuschieri told the court that the accused was parked at the Gnejna car park.
Although he was parked correctly, he passed a snide remark at the officers and they stopped him and asked for his particulars.
He refused to do so and became violent when a scuffle broke out.
Insp. Cuschieri said the accused should be remanded in custody especially considering that his criminal record showed he had previously been given a suspended sentence for using a weapon during an argument.
Defence lawyer Michael Sciriha said the story was slightly different from what the police were alleging and it was his client who was attacked by the officers.
He asked for his client’s injuries, mainly bruising, to be documented.
Mr Scicluna was granted bail against a deposit of €200 and a personal guarantee of €2,000.
