Victoria mayor Samuel Azzopardi, as president of the Region of Gozo and member of the EU’s Assembly of Regional and Local Representatives, recently took part in a plenary session of the Committee of Regions in Brussels.

Dr Azzopardi’s presentation, entitled ‘EU Financial Instruments in Home Affairs’, dealt with the proposed budgets for irregular migration, asylum, EU security and combating terrorism and organised crime.

Dr Azzopardi said: “It is important to always keep in mind that behind the instruments we enact, there are human lives that need to be protected from all sorts of hazards.”

The proposed changes will bring greater transparency in the use of the allocated funds and higher achievements with the help of local and regional authorities.
