Mintoff released from hospital
Former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff has been released from hospital, just in time to celebrate his 96th birthday on Monday.
The health authorities said in a statement this evening that the cardiology team responsible for Mr Mintoff's care reviewed him this morning and he was found to be in a stable condition. He was discharged home this afternoon.
Mr Mintoff has been in hospital for18 days in the Intensive Therapy Unit and later the Critical Coronary Care Unit.
He had been admitted to Mater Dei suffering from pulmonary edema.

Politics are dirty ! Some politicians make them even dirtier . Mintoff was a dictator who had one aim in life and that was to be anti British establishment and to bring in his pro communist ideas to these shores.
Yes, during his time one or two things were brought in however these were countered by the hatred among fellow Maltese, economic ruin that was unprecedented , civil unrest brought on by his dictatorial tactics and bully boy administration , restrictions on normal citizins to a point where one could not even have a colour TV or a bar of chocolate of their choice, unless of course you were a minister or a party member. Public beatings of political opponents, burning and utter destruction of opposition property and clubs. The theft of savings from civil servants such as the widows and orphans contributions that police officers paid out of their own pockets and which were taken by Mintoff's government from them without any re-embursement. Land has been mentioned......yes we must mention the utter scandal of public land being taken and given away to selected party members . Right from the dockyard crisis around 1958 with the infamous riots down to the political unrest of the 70's Mintoff was the person responsible and for that he will certainly be remembered. The bloke is now frail and an old man and I will not lower myself to wish him any ill or pain in retribution for what he managed to acheive however bearing in mind that many of the pirhanas that were about in his day are still about today I pray that this dear country of ours does not make the same mistake yet again and trust its future into PL's hands.

@ Mario Tabone:
You are wrong about Mintoff being against the British because he was the one who asked for 'INTEGRATION' so as us Maltese be treated on same levels as them BUT they didn't accept us. Thats why later Independence was asked from them Mr.Tabone.

What did Ghaddafi do to Mintoff when Mintoff wanted to drill for oil offshore?

Aug 7th 2012, 08:55
@ P.Bonnici:
As far as I know Mr.Bonnici although Mr.Gaddafi sent his gunboats to stop us from continuing exploring for oil, Mintoff didn't put his arms down as he took Libya to the European Courts with regards who owes that part of rock. One wonders how over after more than 25 years PN in government nothing has developed yet.

The few PNers commenting down below just do not know their history . I never got anything personally from the MLP,but I appreciate that Dom did much to make the life of the poorer of the citizens much better than it was before he came to power. And I used to hear of the hardships my father and grandfather and fellow workers used to go through. No pensions,no workers unions, no voting rights for women or for the lower classes, free education, affordable homes for everybody, voting right age lowered to 18 years etc etc ... And the church aiding and abetting the PN to conserve its privileges ( by threats of the mizbla and eternal damnation. You even had to have the parish priest's blessing to be considered for a government job.) The list is too long to go on. So ,I guess that Dom did take us out of the middle ages Mr Gove, and you too should wish him a happy birthday and ad multos annos (or whatever).

@Martin.-----Budgets with "tonn taz-zejt.?" Maybe yes ,that is overdoing it a bit,but the budgets were also about how much Air Malta was contributing to the country, and Mid-Med, and Sea Malta, and BOV, and...... but we run out of space whenever we discuss what this great man has achieved. Just remember that when Mintoff took over the running of the country there was no minimum wage and also no children's allowance scheme. So as many wages were 5pounds a week or less, the standard of living was very low. Mintoff eradicated this with hard and serious work, and with great negotiating skills, in sharp contrast with today's leaders, when poverty is again rearing its ugly head (and it's not the PL only which is saying so).

Best piece of news I've read all week!
As for the guy who's on about the sixties, newspapers and hospitals, let me remind him that it was Gonzi's (the archbishop) influence, aided and abetted by the anti-workers movement, which was the cause that (Labour's) newspapers were banned from hospitals and most other places, as was the infamous "dfin fil-mizbla" for Labourites, no absolution at confessions and tons more "hnizrijiet".
Anyway, Ad Multos annos Perit. May the good Lord be with you always.

Mintoff once again shows what a 'fighter' he is. He is not used to loosing, he knows only how to win. Many even critised him as being a bad looser, which I think he is. But this is because he is a natural winner. I cannot help but to be a great admirer of this man who although human like the rest of us, refuses to loose.
Another great leader, Winston Churchill once said, "You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life", something which Mintoff certainly did, making enemies on the way.
Lord Carington described him as the hardest negotiator he ever came across and he demonstated great respect to our Dom (the nationalist propaganda machine do not say this, I wonder why).
The old lion roars again. Long live Dom!

Franco, yes the 70 and the 80 were the times were, you could own your propert without being in debt for your whole life, times were pensioneers were respected and didnt need to beg after long years of work, years were the foundations of the social services were layed (social services that are going to end up in history in some years time), the list is very long, but some of you choose to highlight the low part of Doms life. Everywhere and everytime to achieve history a strong person needs to rock the boat, and when it happens some people are going to fall in the water , bu t for the benefit of thousands....
