Updated: PN billboard inspires Labour's

(Adds PN's statement)

Inspired by the billboard launched by the Nationalist Party yesterday, the Labour Party today launched a seven-billboard campaign on the same theme but portraying the opposite message.

The billboards, which can be seen in the slideshow above, portray people queuing to receive different services promised by the government.

In a statement, the PN said that Labour's reaction was a sign of panic and showed that Labour leader Joseph Muscat was embassed by the fact that Labour created unemployment.

It said that Dr Muscat's Labour Party could not attack the PN on its positive track record on job creation and recalled that when PL spokesman Karmenu Vella was Minister for Labour, there were 10,000 people who were unemployed.

All the PL billboards did was confirm the PN's message that Labour won't work and will set back the country 30 years, the party said.

What was promised wasn't met. What you say is partially true but the service is not what was so bombastically promised ...zmien il buzullotti spicca for this government means taking people for a ride most of the time.. literally.

Joe Sammut: It is obvious that you do not know enough. You seem to believe whatever is said by minister Dr. Joe Cassar. This is the minister who said that that the problem of placing patients on stretchers in corridors for many hours, is just a winter-time problem ! Go today to the Emergency Department at Mater Dei and check whether there are patients on stretchers in corridors !

As regards your unsure assertion, that waiting lists have been " radically reduced", just ask those who are on the waiting lists, not just for cataract operations !

Aug 5th 2012, 08:04

Mr Grech,

I can personally prove 3 instances in which hospital treatment took too long;

1. During my very 1st year of marriage I was broke from uni bills (you have to pay for an MA), rent, utility bills, and general expenses, so I decided to opt for public health care. I had terrible pain in my knees cause I happened to be flat footed and mis alligned (one would not notice anything unless he is a specialist...nothing visual or limping or anything...just knee pain). So 1st the appointment was made for 5 months later...then I go there and the GP tells me I need an appointment with the consultant, and an appointment is made for another 5 months later. Then I go there and the consultant tells me I need to have an appointment with the ortothics clinic, and its scheduled for another 5 months later. Then I said F it and just went private spent €300 and bye bye all done in one day.

2. I had a peptic ulcer as a kid (very rare but thats luck)...I start having heart burn again last year...made an appintment...and the appointment was scheduled for a year and 2 months later. Again F it and went private...and spent €450 for a scan and tests...but at least I have peace of mind that it was nothing serious.

3. I had lower abdomin pain...and my GP told me its appendix...and its urgent...so I go to the hospital...3 hrs till someone sees me...then I'm stuck waiting for another 2 hrs without anyone telling me anything...then when I told them that my GP said its urgent they laughed it off and said I'm blowing things out of proportion...then when surgen comes he says he never new that it was urgent cause they lost the file...lol...in 5hrs they lost the file...he explains the pocedure...and claims that its only a 2" incession and all done in 2hrs...I wake up in a lot of pain...surgen calls round and tells me if I'm ok...I told him lots of pain for just a 2" incession...well he tells me...you are luck mate...the appendix raptured cause it was left for too long waiting for the op...with them having lost the file and judging you were not too serious casue you just sat down and didn't insist toomuch and showed to much pain...you are lucky you were not poisoned. LOL so if I grumbled they would say I'm exegerating...I i didn't them let him wait...to hell what his doctor claimed.

After having voted for PN all my life...after having atended many meetings, carcades and convinced many disgruntled voters to vote...after being a tesserat for all my voting life...I am not ashamed of having been PN...and will vote PL not because I am labourite...but simply because PN is no longer the PN it use to be...it is simply a party of vote stealers and power suckers.

Paying tax and being treated as scum...that's whats vili Mr Grech

Mr Joe Micallef

Aug 5th 2012, 11:49

Tell me Johhny Scerri where you the only one waiting to be served.

Sure you weren't! In any country free means waiting but you obviously think someone owes you something.

Tell me how much did you pay for your first degree and for your masters? Tell me how much stipends loans do you have? Tell me how many points did you need to get to Uni? Tell me who was your “parrinu”?

Johnny Xerri

Aug 5th 2012, 18:01

Dear Mr Micallef,

No I was not the only one waiting....however;

1. I expect that when a GP signes a letter to the hospital clearly indicating that the patient has a highly inflamed appendix...that needs to be treated urgently to avoid rapture...that at the very least they don't lose the file in a few hrs...that given that a raptured appendix could be deadly...that they act accordingly...mhux u iwa issa naraw...and by the way...the same people who lost my file did stop for a coffee break...more than once...while I waited feverish with a raptured appendix...not to mention the dirt @ the gozo hospital I happenedto have had the misfortune to be operated in.

2. I expect that if I pay taxes @ 35% plus social security (highest rate)...at the very least I don't pay again for health care...otherwise we might just as well have no 'free' this and that...pay a low tax...and go private whenever we need something.

3. Just for info...uni is not free...it is paid out of tax money...smart card hardly covers the cost of books (most of which had to be funded by my parents)...plus MA is fully funded by the student...around €2500.

Secondly...it is nonsense to keep on mentioning the parinu and other arguemnts that are related to the past...as far as Iknow in 1996 AF did not re-install that system at uni...plus we are living today...and will live tomorrow...we cannot re-live the past...we cannot change the past...but we can change the present and the future...

Thirdly...by your argument...then we might as well never have another election...since the past can never be changed...

4th...it is Pn whois now in govt...it is they who were entrusted with the management of the country...it is they who have to answerto the blunders commited...and these cannot be justified with...what would PL have done...or 30 years ago PL had done worst...thats all crap.

Mr Joe Micallef

Aug 5th 2012, 19:19

Johnny Scerri your logic is to say it mildly thwarted. Your last para is a text book case of how not to make sense and show poor analytical skills.

"4th...it is Pn whois now in govt...it is they who were entrusted with the management of the country...it is they who have to answerto the blunders commited...and these cannot be justified with...what would PL have done...or 30 years ago PL had done worst...thats all crap. "

The other paragraphs are worst still and very childish. Ex, Of course nothing is free but the last time PL was in government apart from the taxes to fund education it stopped the stipends,

Certainly the PN is in government and it will answer to the electorate about your so called “blunders” (waiting at the ER department), but moving forward I need to know how these "blunders" will be remedied and until today we have not an iota of a clue.
This being the case it than becomes an issue of trust. As far as I am concerned I do not trust the PL leader who is on record wrong on a number of macro issues from EU membership to suggesting we adopt the Cypriot economic model. But above all I do not trust all those pre 1987 PL members who I consider belonged to a political criminal organisation that wanted a socialist society at the expense of others.
You see myself, I decide who to vote for, by looking at macro policies. Over the last 30 years the PN has outclassed the PL on all counts. Just to mention a few

Foreign Policy
Trade Policy
Education Policy
Health Policy
Infrastructure
Technology
VAT
Local Councils
EU membership
EURO

Whilst countries around us are flipping under macro tragedies you vote for a change because of hunting, waiting in queue or because of a late bus. God Bless you and I rest my case

The PL may have no idea (your quote) but I sure have and know the kind of jobs the PN has brought recently. Precarious ones. No wonder we are being overtaken (PPP statistics) even by the poor ex-communist countries. First it was Slovenia and now the Czech Republic is within an arm's length.
And yet despite of all these jobs (sic) we still can't balance the budget and bring down the debt burden. It's because you can't flog a dead horse...you can't tax precarious work!

They are waiting for the bus to go to Smart City Mr Tabone! What proposals are you waiting for? Bringing down income tax? Guaranteeing the jobs of Air Malta and the Drydocks? Anyone can promise anything on this island and then we reserve the excuses for later. Proposals are for nothing! Have you ever read any party's proposals that promised a worse government?
What I look for is track record (if available) or trust if not. As for the first Dr Muscat has none but he has the second criteria for me. As for Dr Gonzi he has none of both except a very wrought filling track record.

Joe Tabone

Aug 4th 2012, 18:16

@ J Bugeja,
You want LABOUR's track record? As for the 80's their track record was record UNEMPLOYMENT, and even the few who had decent jobs could not enjoy their earnings as there was nothing to buy. Can you imagine that you go abroad and the first thing you think of buying for your kids are Mars bars and toothpaste.
The 1998 LABOUR government gave us the steepest utility bills when the price of oil was at its lowest i.e $12 a barrel (now over $100 a barrel) together with the introduction of CET that resulted in economic disaster for the country. This is LABOUR's track record!

Joseph Bugeja

Aug 4th 2012, 19:00

@ Joe Tabone,

No mention about Gonzi's promises nor about Joseph Muscat.
You mentioned Mars back in the seventies.
Well, I may be older than you if you're interested in history. In the sixties yes we had Mars but my parent's couldn't afford to buy the luxury. With £5 a week you could barely subsist and my dad was then employed by the British . The Maltese employers offered you £2 a week (not an hour) and if you worked on the outside and it rained it was deducted from your wages.
So stop teaching me history. History repeats itself it is said and with these precarious wages we are fast going backwards.
I don't know about record unemployment since in the sixties the unemployed had to emigrate and they didn't count any more. In the seventies quite a few returned. But perhaps you can teach me about record deficits and debt...if the number doesn't make you dizzy.

So sensitive guys? last week I was criticised for making fun of the bridge to nowhere by a Gonzi apologist which in his opinion I'm a PL supporter and today by a PL Fanatic cause I find the Billboards funny and reminding the danger they pose with that block of concrete more than by the board itself. Johnny Xerri

Aug 4th 2012, 18:03

@ Joe Micallef...so a long list of failures and you still want more...?

1. The power station as commissioned will not serve to replace Marsa power station...when Pl had hinted at this and told them that its either more capacity or an interconector Pn ridiculed (or tried to) PL...now works have started on the interconector.

2. They replaced the MEPA auditor...without consulation just because he was a torn in the backside (or rather their backside).

3.PN created arms and smart meters...and yet bills are still not on time...customer complaints are still not logged and dealt with on time...

4. Following the fiasco of the enemalta power station tender the auditor general had specifically recommended an internal audit unit...to date we still don't have one...and this could have saved the minister from a further mercaptan fiasco...and malta from the dangers of mercaptan disposal.

5. A minister that hardly presented any reform...and was the 1st ever minister to ever be removed from his ministery following a vote of confidence...

Need more...in case just ask for more.

Lol...PN suppoters instead of rebuting any one of the mentioned fiascos you simply try to shoot the messanger...and thats not even hilarious....but simply sad, pathatic and childish...but then what can be expected from the brainwashed blinkered supporters.

Joe Tabone,

Joseph Muscat at least had the decency to form a working group with the hunters and already stated more than once that hunters will not be privillaged...but will be entitled to enjoy their pastime without any privillage as stipulated by the birds directive....which is much more than what we are being offered by Gone-zi PN...hopefully your question will be further addressed on 1st spring season under PL administration.

Furthermore, even if PL offer no more than what PN is dishing...it was PN who had eneterd into a democratic obligation by sending to each and every hunter signed letters...but none the less than EFA & Simon Busutil...so instead of passing the buck on PL...why not answer why the PN did not deliver as promised...was it because they lied...or was it because they lied?

Joe Vella

Aug 4th 2012, 18:22

If they are published an PN copy some.. then it means that PN has no ideas and it will be easier for PL to win the election... when we are left in a dream, i.e. a PL government will solve everything without telling us how, is this the way to go, did we ever see parties in the world, when they are right, pushing their idea through even if they are in the Opposition. Again, if the idea is copied, it means that the government is sleeping...

UNTIL Then.... the PL is saying that 'what's good for the goose is good for the ganders'

Mr Joe Micallef

Aug 4th 2012, 18:47

Yes please I'm loving it. Maybe if I may ask you stop beating around the same bush.

Ma tafx tisthi imma zqur taf iddahak!

Johnny Xerri

Aug 4th 2012, 21:17

Mr Joe Micallef,

If you had noticed (as you should have done before commenting)...I did not beat around the same bush...you would have loved that...beating around one bush would not have ashamed anyone...however, I have taken the decency to beat around 16 bushes...

What I am awaiting for is a sensible reply to counter act these points I mentioned. Sensible well versed people, with their country's best interest at heart would not insult others or try to belittle them...they would hold arguments and present facts to counter act accusations by others.

The very fact that you choose to ridicule instead of correcting or justifying the points I mentioned shows your superiority complex...and portrays you as either a person who is riding on the gravy train.,..or a blinkered person who cannot see objectively his party's failures...

Come on that up the challenge and instead of ridiculing...try and present a counter argument.

Mr Joe Micallef

Aug 5th 2012, 09:27

Johnny I am sorry for you for being so sorry! Not beating about the bush - I can find Enemalta mentioned about 4 time in different points.

Take you challenge. Do not really have time to waste with you but

Your point 1. Lack of control in most entities and deptarments. Really you must be (as you are) devoid of policies to mark this as a government shortcoming. Public bodies around the world are not a picture of perfect management. Mercaptan issue? I know it is being investigated and hope that any wrong dooers are severely punished. But tell me, bright one, how will PL get such departments running on “rubini” - if I have to go on its historical performance IT WAS A COMPLETE MESS. Let me just go back to the SANT era and mention just two instances. The Utility prices and the CET - The handling of just those two issues is a text book case of incompetence.

2. The no funds for tax cuts...yet enough funds for their cabinet's €500 / week salary increase. You, being a socialist, are envious of other people's achievements and pay related to responsibilities. As they say pay peanuts and get monkeys. But how will the PL solve the issue - You are so envious that it has totally escaped you that Joey will still get his (undeserved pay rise). The only difference is that he will entrust 3 (public figures -employed by the government) to declare that MPs deserve a wage increase and by consequence the 3 will get an increase themselves.

3. Arriva Fiasco - Yes sure it's a big Fiasco. Your objectivity is weak as is your ability to think for yourself. Surely there have been severe problems (most of which totally beyond Arriva's control) but a year on I think this is turning out to the long sought change needed. There are certainly more problems to overcome, but that is what people who work usually come across. How will the PL solve this - luckily they are not needed! They never did anything about it and today it is a private concern (something you can't live with)

4. The hunters stolen vote – Oh yes this is a big one isn’t it. Although myself I despise killing of birds (and for the record I also despise the bird hugging NGO’s) I do not agree that hunters have been cheated. Certainly new court ruling have changed the scenario – Ooops sorry I forgot that you being a socialist do not abide by court rulings!

5. THIS (from direct experience) I can tell you, outlines your immense DISHONESTY.

Would like to reply to the rest but I have better things to do.

In the meantime if, at least on the above, you can tell me how voting for PL will improve these issues I will be much obliged.

Johnny Xerri

Aug 5th 2012, 11:34

Mr Micallef,

1. Of course I mentioned EMC 4 times...but always on a different point...so if EMC has 4 faults we only mention one fault...not to beat around the same bush...or around the same Minister and friends?

2. Re your comment on how PL will solve the lack of control...well stop shifting the buck on PL...it is PN who are in power...they have to solve this...and as I and many see it....they failed...remember MEPA was taken under the helm of the PM...and yet...it still is rampant & riddled with abuse...EMC was given to Mr Agostino Pio Gatt...the ehavey weight....the macho that no one dares trample on...yet the BWSC and power station fiasco...and now the Mercaptan...(which by the way is not being investigated...but has already been investigated...lol...by EMC itself...with the conclusion that senior management was unaware...and that the people responsible have left work...so no disiplinary action can be taken...plus 3 years have passed so no criminal action can be taken...what did we expect...as if anyone punishes himself).

3. Hunters did have the vote stolen...since EFA had stated in black and white that an agreemnet was reached...FKNK hold official docs from the EU Commission that an agreement was never ever reached...but Malta just mentioned that they might derogate as required...had they negotiated as EFA claimed...no court ruling would ahve ever changed the signed agreement...plus in 2010 the season was only permitted for 5 half days...the hunters boycotted this and following years 2011 & 2012 it was opened for 13 days...lol...so why not open for 13 days in 2010 as well? Why claim to have neg when in fact they did not...maybe to steal votes?

4. Arriva is such a success story that gozitan workers have quit using minibuses and started using arriva...lol...go to cirkewwa at 6, 6:30 & 7 am and you will see how many use minibuses and how many use arriva...obtain official statistics on tickets sold by arriva...and tickets sold prior to arriva? Why is arriva reluctant to issue such data?

5. I worked hard at uni...got an MA...and currently reading for a Phd...I have a job that is taxed @ 35% so I earn enough not to be envy others earning high wages...but I will never tolerate monkeys deserving peanuts...obtaining hefty wages...did Austin Gatt deserve an increase after the fiasco he made at Enemalta (such a fiasco that the PM removed EMC from his portfolio and gave it to the finance minister...lol...what has finance got to do with EMC...apart from addressing the short comings of Agostino Pio Gatt).

By the way.,.as I stated many a time...I was until very recent times a PN supporter...a tesserat...a blue eyed person...but now I removed the blinkers...and actually feel ashamed to have voted PN for so long. An I a socialist...a labourite...no...but at least I acknowledge right from wrong...and will vote PL...maybe 10 years in opposition will bring back PN to the PN they once were...not this Gone-zi PN rubbish of lies and treating people as down right morons who always get it wrong...and they are the divinity that always is right but wrongly misunderstood.

Mr Joe Micallef

Aug 5th 2012, 16:22

So in your opinion just because Labour have not yet put up a billboard about Malta's current economy it means that our economy is in excellent shape. How naive can you get Ms Briffa!

Be patent and you'll have your billboard about our limping economy.

Joseph Micallef

Aug 4th 2012, 15:08

Your are consuming expired food Carl, watch out as it's bad for your health. What is this reasoning? Are we playing a ping-pong game? You say something and I answer back? Come on! What the PL did was simply putting GonziPN's statements into practice and showing, through evidence and facts that GonziPN's is a total failure in various sectors.

ALBERT FENECH

Aug 4th 2012, 15:16

Yes, or course - this is one of the reasons why the PL will be strongly contesting a forthcoming General Election sic to ensure that unemployment is created, so that people living below the poverty line become even poorer etc. What a trite comment Mr Callus and one that can be added to a lot of other nonsense posted here by various contributors - as well as the now-familiar attempt to portray the current PL as "old Labour" when what is really happening is that a whole package of new, eager, young and highly professional people will be contesting on behalf of the PL. Here then is a challenge to the Gonzi PN - put your money where your mouth is and call a General Election so the electorate can decide who and what they want as a Government.

ALBERT FENECH

Fact...PL was in favor of the project from day 1
Fact PN used smart city as his electoral card....promised all kinds of figures without ant basis...fact..check in nazzjon for figures...and interview with chairman recently on times
Fact PN didnt deliver..especially as regards the pumping station...Fact PL started criticising...not the project!! but pn propaganda
Fact...go to smart city right now( better late than never???!!!! 5 years passed!!) and count the thousands of jobs!
Fact: all the 7 above posters talk about FACTS!!!!!!!

M Grima

Aug 4th 2012, 15:51

You are really a bad dreamer Karl.

Mr Joe Micallef

Aug 4th 2012, 16:13

Simon Cassar you are right they are facts. They are facts that outline the success of PN in government. Because the PN is in government people tend to (rightfully) expect more

SMART CITY - This is a small part of the incredible success of an administration that inherited a country were to have a computer you needed a special licence and a signed declaration that could land you in prison
Anything IT is foreign to you

FACILITATOR – The facilitator is related to education another great success of PN. In PL times we had a castrated education system which destroyed the basic human need to aspire. Today we have a thriving university an MCAST (which the PL destroyed) and ITS. The facilitator is part of all this system which seeks to give everyone a chance to succeed.

Education for the PL is consonant to anchovy paper

ARRIVA – Well there certainly are problems but the system itself lends itself to expected improvements. This government has made a change that was long due and despite being jeopardised by many it will deliver. Myself I now have a bus service which 5 minutes off my door before I had to walk at least 25 minutes. Today Gozo has a bus service when before it did not have one. Today the buses are less polluting.
More changes are required but PL never did anything so nothing to show for it

SPTAR – Despite the problems this is again another success for PN. If I was sick wouldn’t I want to get free professional service at excellent facilities. The PL chose an anonymous (well it is current PL to be anonymous) old lady – bad bad PR choice. One remembers how PL used to dumb old people in mgieret as a horrible waiting room to afterlife. Today we have high quality homes with waiting lists.

PL has nothing to teach on health

NCOME TAX – Well yes, in the circumstances this seems to being one of the casualties of the PN manifesto. Myself I hope it is. The country cannot afford it. But one has to be void of shame to pontificate on taxes. The PL is synonymous with 65% tax and (up to) 22% with the CET froga.

PL is a Tax threat

MEPA – I understand (and know) that the PL is making untold promises so really I have nothing to say here. What I can say is that MEPA has tried to remove the web of corruption that existed in the PL golden years. I do not think it has achieved the desired success but I am not aware of minsters becoming millionaires as far as owning private zoos from unilaterally granting permits.

MEPA will be PL's downfall

OPERAZZJONIJET – Same applies as with SPTAR above. Just take heart operations this has been nothing short of a miracle. Certainly the PN needs to live to the expectations it has created. Unlike in time of PL having an operation in state of the art facilities creates a demand and expectations.

you are right my friend but it seems that you are like a blind folded horse. Is it positive to wait for a long time in a corridor at the new hospital, isit right to terminate a job(Malta Shipyards) What about the buses do you make you use of the arriva buses otherwise do not talk about them.Have you ever been waiting for more than an hour for the bus(Marsaxlokk).

Joseph Micallef

Aug 4th 2012, 15:17

Oh my oh my.....

New hospital which costed a fortune and with patients being treated in corridors,

New buses with the worst service possible, with regular breakdowns, inefficient, non-punctual, some with AC's failing, unreliable, created a disaster for the traffic, always involved in life threatening collisions and accidents,

Smartcity which is not operational, turned into a ghost city with just a cafeteria having 2-5 employees working as opposed to the 7,000 jobs promised.

Before speaking, verify your statements with your own hands not by listening to Radio 101

Josef Pisani

Aug 4th 2012, 15:21

Lol Marco ! Good one

Robert Agius

Aug 4th 2012, 15:31

Have you actually used the buses? Or just a couple of times when you get back from, where was it? London? While I can say that there are some obvious good things about the new service, there are more negatives from my experience using Arriva. What is new is not necessarily better - take the power station, apparently the new one is not good enough to close the old on down.

Hospital, having a new hospital is nice, of course. Not having money to run it is a different story. Not to mention why the took so long to complete it, especially considering that winter when it got flooded and a lot of tax payers money was squandered; I am sure some people pocketed some money from repairing that 'unfortunate accident'.

Smart city? what smart city? ..,sorry, they have been in power for 25 years...who do you expect to bring investment in? the opposition? (but since PN like to go back to the past....what about SGS, which was definitely a success?) I don't wish to to any more comparisons however. Time to look ahead. Then again the mediocrity, lack of imagination and innovation this country is infested with might have something to do with the fact that the vast majority are still living in the 70's.

Related to DCG? that would explain a lot. Many others stopped waving their blue banners a while ago. PN has realised this and this is why they fear an election now.

Please note that I am not even a labour supporter. They might get a vote from me though, if anything just out of spite for the current PN administration.

ALBERT FENECH

Aug 4th 2012, 15:48

Oh - so I see it all now Mr Caruana Galizia. Smartcity is still being built and we Maltese and Gozitans are an impatient lot. Perhaps you can assure me it will be ready in time to be of benefit to my great grandchildren at some undefined future point? Also most reassuring to read your comment that hospital waiting queues are mostly people waiting to have splinters removed from their fingers. However, I find that hard to reconcile with the fact that four months ago my late aged mother was kept waiting in an Emergency Section corridor for 14 - yes 14 hours - suffering from a severe stroke. I guess we as the family were very impatient to fret and worry about this - after all she was only virtually at death's door.

ALBERT FENECH

Aug 4th 2012, 16:55

Mr. Caruana Galizia,
1. No, Smart City is not being built. The land given almost for free is being re-sold piece by piece!
2. No, you do not need to go with a splinter to hosptal in order to spend long hours of waiting in the coridors. You wait in the coridors after being treated by doctors who conclude that you are in a bad state enough to keep you in hospital, BUT there are no beds for you! That is because the state if the art hospital was built by architects without consulting medical experts.
3. Buses don't take an hour to arrive!? And how on earth do you know that?
On a positive note, at least your comment is civilized, something which, over here in Malta, we are not used to, coming from such a surname.

pat muscat

Aug 4th 2012, 17:20

@ Mr Galiza.Wait? Mela, ahna persuni tas-sekonda klassi?..... we don't have the luxury of having 9 lives like cats? .........wait for operations, wait for hospital beds, wait for Arriva, wait for fake promises that come with a fake smile :wait for Godot?

michael catania

Aug 4th 2012, 19:14

I think you are short of a few feathers

Mr Edward Caruana Galizia

Aug 4th 2012, 19:42

Before Arriva we had the old buses. Remember them? The rickety 60 year old monsters that had NO airconditioning, broke down often, had holes in the floor at time, some had no windows and often the bus driver was an unpleasant person who never gave you the change you wanted and from time to time would suddenly change the number on the front of the bus mid journey and tell everyone to get off and I often would wait for around forty five minutes for a bus. Want to go back to that? You blame the government for late buses? I usually blame the traffic.

Yes we all want services to run like machines. But they are not machines. The jobs are carried out by people who can only do what is humanly possible. If doctors have left you waiting, then take it up with them. Is it so hard to understand that a government doesn't control every aspect of life? Well perhaps if you were brought up worshiping Mintoff and KMB who Tried to do exact that, then I m not surprised.

And let's look at the PL's track record of health care. No doctors. Would you like to go back to that?

My surname has nothing to do with whether or not you should respond. You are classist and narrow-minded. Perhaps you should go to one of those creative seminars run by your dear leader, to broaden your mind a bit.

I am in Malta often. I use the buses whenever I am there. I gave up having a car to save the money to study abroad. I read the maltese papers every day. I know what is going on. I don't have a submissive character at all, but I am patient and don't believe in treating people like machines and screaming and shouting at them all the time. Gets you no where and it is really rude too.

Robert Agius

Aug 4th 2012, 21:16

What the 60yr old ones you now see in London? Yes, I spent many year using those buses (still don't have a car either) and NO it was not so bad. As I stated before, they were far from perfect but other better solutions could have been found. I blame long term bad planning, not traffic. When it comes to bad planning nothing is worse than MEPA though. 25 years is a long time. No more excuses.

Mintoff did indeed have his bad runs, but if you can't find any positive things he did then you surname clearly does in fact show your bias. (or was bringing PL down the only good thing in you opinion?) Having said that, do you honestly believe that if PL win we will have a repetition of the 70s????

Read the paper....know what's going on. Must be pretty confusing if you watch both ONE and NET then. I don't spend much time here either these days but to give you a few examples - having to pay NI even though retired and given your contribution. Who should they blame PL? Or someone whose husband lost his job for a while, was working for minimum wage of which a commission was deducted from her, i repeat - minimum wage, by an HR co. with a certain MP tie. Again, Who to blame? PL? Don't even get me started on Mepa and the rampant tax evasion in the island. Who should we blame? PL?...want me to go on?

Of course, it is very easy for me, like for the vast part of humans, say - I'm fine so screw you, Jack. Things are however far from fine in general and while things are not perfect anywhere around the globe the waste, corruption and lack of proper management by the current administration is a disgrace. They had ample time to get their act together but preferred to ride their high horses and get lost in cloud 9.

Do I believe PL will solve all out problems? NO
Do I think that PN losing will be a rude awakening? Yes

Time for petty excuses and scaremongering is over.

Mr Edward Caruana Galizia

Aug 4th 2012, 22:37

No, I cannot find anything positive to say about Mintoff. The same way I can t find anything positive to say about all the other Communist leaders of the world.

Robert Agius

Aug 5th 2012, 09:06

Prosit! Tribal politics is what ruined this island and reasons behind it's mediocrity. You, and all the other wackos who only see things in red and blue are what is wrong with this island. Keep it up!

Indeed communism is stupid, but not as stupid as capitalism; You can join the yanks in their irrational (well, not quite since they are a self serving bunch, like many western nations), and uncannily fundamental religious like, fear of communism.

Mr Edward Caruana Galizia

Aug 5th 2012, 13:45

Not being blue to find something positive to say about a person who ruined the life of your family and in fact of the whole country is not tribal, it is common sense.

The PN have not ruined anyone's life. And by ruined I don t mean made them wait a while for a bus. I mean threatened to kidnap their children, put bombs in their house and garden, turn off their water and chase out of the country. No one has been tortured by the PN. No one has had their human rights violated.

Ask any Russian and they will find nothing good to say about Communism. Ask and German and they will find nothing good to say about Communism and Fascism. Look at North Korea. Did you know that people there have to eat the flesh of the dead bodies of their relative just to stay alive? That is what Communism means.

The only reason why you and people like you still stand by Mintoff and KMB is because their time in office didn't last long enough to come crashing down on you too. Had it done so, you wouldn't be looking for positive things to say about Mintoff.

Tribal politics? How facile an argument can you make?

Robert Agius

Aug 5th 2012, 15:21

Ask South Americans what they think? the vast majority of the people there lean left?

Oh really? that is why the international community cried foul play in recent Russian elections, claiming that votes were rigged? and guess which party is united Russians main opposition? Of course, no one is saying anything good about Stalin, of course. Although the communist are run by dictators, the two are separate. When you begin to understand international politics, especially by the west, it might become clear to you why this is so.

As for the Germans, fancy that, apart from the holocaust, the western world seems to have learned at lot from the Nazis ....

Forget N. Korea, one madman gone and hopefully his son is gone too soon enough. But the US tactics and propaganda are really working in instilling irrational fear against any system which is not extremely individualistic. In a system where giving ownership of resources back to THE PEOPLE turns them into cannibals. Amazing!!! No, giving CERTAIN people too much power does that. And when you have too much power, you don't even need to get your hands dirty either. You politely steal away other nations resources. SELLING WEAPONS does that? And while I think Putin is a tyrant and wrong to be in power in Russia, he sure as hell hits the nail on its head when it comes to international politics. This is however going way out of topic though.

So...

Oh sure! political tribal violence only came from one side then, right? (interesting to note the 70's worldwide political climate since I believe that played an active role) Do you see a nation returning and de-evolving to the 70's politcs and remain in power? seriously, you must be out of your mind of suffer acute paranoia. Perhaps the sign at the beginning of the the queue should have read ' back to the 70's'? Mind you, I was a child then, in a Nationalist family btw. I was there celebrating what was to come...I have only voted AD, not because I believe that they can ever win, but having a couple of seat in parliament would be good. I have not voted much since then since I'm rarely on the island and, to be honest in recent year, coming to vote was really not worth it. This time I will make sure I will cast my vote, and though I have never voted PL, this time they might just get something this time.... Of course, you are free, in your arrogance, to claim this is not true. Typical of tribal politics.

Mr Edward Caruana Galizia

Aug 5th 2012, 16:41

I am not arrogant. I only abhor those who were part of a government that violated human rights and brought Communism to Malta.. Those are the people you plan on giving your vote to. I also abhor racism. This doesn't mean I don't respect people's different opinions. It means I stand up for the dignity of every person on the planet. Yes, I bring up racism since quite a few members of the PL were members of a racist facebook group they agreed to join and openly defended their membership of that group.

In Malta there is not real choice between left wing and right wing politics. It is simply those who want the government of the 80s back and those who don't. Those who want a PM surrounded by the former cabinet of Mintoff and KMB and those who don't.

And they don't for simple humane reasons, and not tribal politics.

Nowhere on Earth has Communism worked. Nowhere on Earth has it given life to a country and brought equality and prosperity. Everywhere on Earth it has failed. If you have any proof of Communism working, please let us know.

I have every respect for different opinions, except those that promote the oppression of the people and strip them of their dignity, which is what Mintoff and KMB did. Those that surround Muscat today are part of that crowd.

Yes, nationalist supporters struck back, I am sure they did. However so did people throughout the USSR. Do you call them violent and autocratic? No, because they were fighting for their freedom not for their egos.

Robert Agius

Aug 5th 2012, 20:26

No racists on the other side of the fence you say? u hallina!!

If you learn a bit of history it might come clear to why communism never worked in the grand scheme of things, or is ever likely to. Or do you think that the French, British etc. when around the world to save mankind, their freedoms and dignity? Or gave back 'independence' without that nation paying a price?

Of course, If you read carefully, you will see that I said communism is stupid too, just not as stupid as capitalism. All forms of idealism in fact are. Only a balance of the two works. Of course I hope you do understand that these terms are different to the concept of democracy, which is in a rather sad state today I must add and is just an illusion. Somebody said you must have a submissive character. I wouldn't take it so personal, people in general are rather submissive, especially when they fear.

'In Malta there is not real choice between left wing and right wing politics. It is simply those who want the government of the 80s back and those who don't. Those who want a PM surrounded by the former cabinet of Mintoff and KMB and those who don't.' If this is not tribal politics, then I wonder what is. You do prove my point when I said what a sad state democracy is in. Look what a fabulous choice we have!!

I suggest you vote AD too. You see, with a 34 against 35 parliament, it only takes one from the leading tribe to have it his way. (look at the panic 3 MPs caused). Now picture 2 or 3 independent alternatives in there. But of course, there PL and PN are best friends and agree 100%. No bad mouthing each other there. The lesser of the two evils has shifted over the past decade. Well, at least for those who are not stuck in the 70's.

Mr Edward Caruana Galizia

Aug 5th 2012, 21:13

You talk about being stuck in the 70s ( and 80s) when it is the PL who has brought back all those people. Those people who were part of that government and did nothing to stop it when they could have done everything to stop it.

This is not tribal politics, standing by your party no matter what. This is about making sure those people who committed crimes against humanity aren't given a second chance to do it again. Why is that not common sense to you?

David Magro

Aug 4th 2012, 14:50

Mr.Cutajar,

I can guarantee you that :
1. We still queue behind a minister door to get a job
2. We still queue behind a minister door to get our relatives in a home
3. We still queue behind a minister door to get a MEPA permit
4. We queue behind a minister door to do an operation
5. We queue behind a minister door for a permit
6. Speak to minister or his visir to get a prmotion in Gov department
7.Speak to minister / visir to get VAT exemption
8. And the list goes on...God knows what type of blacklist against people who do not share PN policy does exists

Anthony Grech

Aug 4th 2012, 15:46

George the longest queue the Maltese Islands ever had was those of emigrants at the Grand Harbour during the 60's. But if you wish to see a modern queue just come to Victoria (ministry) all year round, or to Nadur Gozo. They say that Nadur got two Saints as patrons.... and its not Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

M Grima

Aug 4th 2012, 16:07

I'll add some more to your list :-
1. Under the PN you have to queue for 2 days to get a hospital bed.
2. Under the PN you have to queue for at least 10 hours before you are seen to at the Emergency Dept at Mater Dei
3. Under the PN you have to queue to get a promotion unless you are a 'tesserat' of the PN party
4. Under the PN you have to queue for at least 1 hour to get an Arriva bus
5. Under the PN the under privileged have to queue to get free EU food
6. Under the PN you have to queue to get your supposed free medicines only to find that they are out of stock
7. Under the PN you have to queue for years to have a decision on a Court case

And the list goes on George!!!

George Cutajar

Aug 4th 2012, 16:33

@ David Magro - ANthony Grech - M. Grima - since all three of you seem to be in sync in replying to my post I will answer all three together.

Without in any way accepting what you are saying as being the truth - while what I said is the proven truth -the massive difference between then and now is that if anybody feels aggrieved on any matter concerning delays etc. the PN Government and only the PN Government gave the people the tools to seek redress. As far as I recall under MLP governments the citizen had no right to seek redress.

Obviously once in government the movement and it's dear leader will remove all the queues as from day one everybody has a guaranteed job, all old relatives will be found a home, all pending MEPA permits will be issued at the stroke of a pen, the waiting lists at Mater Dei will become non-existent, everybody will get a promotion and all VAT dues and penalties will be forgiven.

After all JM and the merry band are promising heaven on earth to everyone and everybody.

"I am PN, and will vote for the PN" is the same mentality that gives the world such supreme inspirations a GW Bush :)

Fair enough it is your prerogative but I do not think thats the sort of mentality that helps a country choose the best leaders.

Quite frankly were I really of your frame of mind I would have said to myself ... will vote PN cause I love the LP ... looking at the state of the country's finances I really should be thinking that way.

Always the negative, babaw attacks by PN supporters on Labour. Could you please tell us why are you so afraid that the people would eventually vote Labour if you are so convinced your party did so well during the last 4 and a half years in government?

George Cutajar

Aug 4th 2012, 15:03

@ Willie Grech - very simple dear sir - having lived under Labour in the seventies and eighties with what were meant to be the best years of our life fighting for essential liberties which we take for granted today and after having seen the mess of the country the movement made between 1996 and 1998, and seeing that the movement is now led by somebody who would have preferred to keep us out of the EU I have a funny feeling that should the movement win the election it will lead us into a brick wall in no time.

I hope that answers your question.

Willie Grech

Aug 4th 2012, 17:17

@ George Cutajar.

Another post mentioning the 'babaw' of the 80's. As if the 80's was made of the babaw state you try to picture. But in doing so, you refrained from answering a very simple question. For your sake, here it is again and hopefully I will get a simple answer for a simple question.

Could you please tell us why are you so afraid that the people would eventually vote Labour if you are so convinced your party did so well during the last 4 and a half years in government?

There, hopefully it is simple enough for you!!

Nazzareno Cortis

B. Cachia

Aug 4th 2012, 12:45

Even leaving aside the fact that the original NP billboard was a copy of an old poster, it was at best merely a 'criticism' of something that might happen in the future. So it can hardly be said that it was leading the way in any sense, or that it was presenting something positive.

As for leadership in a more general sense, it's hardly the word one would use to describe the governing party at the moment. Even committed Nationalists will admit in private that Lawrence Gonzi is no leader, and many have said so publicly as well.

Mr Eric Camilleri

Aug 4th 2012, 12:58

Proset Sur Cuschieri kemm taf!! Il-PL is not reacting is telling truth!

If you find that these billboards are lies just comment

A Cuschieri

Aug 4th 2012, 13:20

Because according to you the above billboards tell us the truth about PN (according to you I repeat). What's the PL proposing though?

You are not a floating voter.

Only PL supporters use the word GonziPN in a deragotary manner.

At least be sincere when you comment.

Joseph Micallef

Aug 4th 2012, 13:17

@ J. Debono,

Who are you to dictate how others should speak? Only PN supporters act in a dictatorship manner. After all, why should you feel ashamed of the slogan GonziPN? They were sou proud of it before the last general election, why are you feeling like hiding it?

J. Debono

Aug 4th 2012, 13:30

@ Joseph Micallef

I say it again, he is not a floating voter but a PL supporter.

What is wrong with that, is he shamed to say he is a PL supporter.

Yes I agree with you, I should not dictate how others speak. However he should have started his comment by 'I am a PL supporter'.

Aug 4th 2012, 12:10

James, I think you have a serious problem as in politics, if someone acts super fast, it's deemed that he/she is super sensitive to what goes on in society. Partit Laburista's can't setup billboards about the way forward as your prime minister, even though he launched the first billboard, did not whistle the bell for an election yet. He is hijacking the country at this point not only his party!!

Willie Grech

Aug 4th 2012, 12:20

@ James Azzopardi.

Your assumptions and your bias show your colours. Please check, for example, Labour's 51 proposals on the government's last budget. That will give you an idea of what the PL is made of. You may not agree with any or all of them, but that doesn't mean that the PL is 'unprepared' or that they 'do not address the problems they highlighted.'

Richard Galea

Aug 4th 2012, 12:30
