People purchasing from penny auction websites should be extremely careful and well-informed of the rules as buyers sometimes had to pay not just for their purchase but also for each time they bid, the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority said.

It said the bidding payment had to be made even if the auction was not won.

The authority said that the number of complaints about this increased considerably in European countries in the past weeks and it was working in collaboration with other entities for consumer rights to continue to be safeguarded.
