The Gasan and Zammit groups have merged their automotive and marine interests to form the second largest car importer in Malta, the family businesses announced yesterday.

GasanZammit Limited, the new company, will house the Capelli, Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, Isuzu, Jaguar, Mazda, Pirelli, Volvo, and Yamaha brands.

Subject to clearance from the Office of Fair Competition, GasanZammit Limited will begin operations in October from the Gasan Centre in Mrieħel, set to be the largest multi-showroom complex in Malta.

The merger’s objectives will be to consolidate and build on the experience and success the Gasan and Zammit companies have enjoyed over their combined 130 years of operations. Directors are confident the merger will result in more growth, increased value added for stakeholders, and improved service levels.

“This merger will give a new dimension to the local automotive sector, creating more advantages to the local consumer, a stronger working environment for our employees, and a more competitive environment for the industry,” Zammit Group chairman Joseph Zammit said yesterday.

“We believe that in these past years, both companies have garnered a high level of respect and credibility within the local industry. These values, together with our will to continue to deliver an improved customer experience, are the main thrust that will drive the future successes of this new company.”

Gasan Group chairman Joseph Gasan said both companies shared humble origins: their founders started their businesses by taking the initiative and being among the first to take advantage of opportunities that presented themselves.

“Today, almost a century later, history repeats itself. We are now creating a new opportunity for consolidation and growth,” Mr Gasan said.

With more than 80 years of growth, diversity and innovation, the Gasan Group is one of Malta’s most renowned business organisations with successful automotive and marine operations. It also encompasses businesses involved in insurance, total building services solutions, and property development. It employs more than 600 people.

The Zammit Group of Companies has been built by four generations of entrepreneurship. Besides its activity in shipping and oil and gas, the group is best known for its operations in the automotive sector with its flagship car brands Honda, Chevrolet and Isuzu.
