Chetcuti sets national record
Maltese swimmer Andrew Chetcuti set a new national record in the 100 metres freestyle heats at the London Olympic Games on Tuesday.
Starting in lane five of the third heat, Chetcuti completed the distance in 51.67 seconds - 0.18 seconds faster than his own national best he set earlier this year.
Chetcuti finished the race third behind Albania’s Sidni Hoxha (51.11) and Guam’s Kevin Soto (51.44).
Despite the good result, the Maltese swimmer failed to qualify for the semifinals.

You should have swam in the 100m freestyle yourself then, Mr. Joe Fenech... we would have probably done better, judging by your comment.

Yes, but there is no need of such hype! Winning the national Maltese record is like saying "you've set a university sports record"!

To all these know it alls down here, saying no medals 37th place bla bla bla. How can a small island like Malta compete with others out there?
Fist off, Malta is a small island with 400k and no some 10's of millions population. Secondly, I'm pretty sure that this one is not a professional swimmer meaning that he does not live off of it but does it as a hobby or w/e. One cannot compare Maltese athletes with other Country's.
Well done.

You should be proud that a Maltese person has achieved a national record and placed 3rd when participating in such top quality competitions........ I can't believe that you found something to complain about in such a positive article! Unbelievable!!

some people care about national record .... and supporting their country. No he didnt win, didnt neither qualify but hey, he was there amist the best and still made us proud !!
Mr David Ganado
Jul 31st 2012, 16:23
Do you even know how to swim Mr. Fenech?
Who cares? We as a nation should be proud that we have someone there who has dedicated a good part of his life to producing that result. Compare the effort you made to get to the Olympics, then you could comment accordingly.
Just because he is nowhere near the top finalists does not mean we should not applaud him.

It's unbelievable that we have people like you in Malta. Considering that Malta's population is only 400,000 compared to the millions other countries have, Chetcuti's success is a feat in itself.
Luckily people like you are countable and the rest are proud of Chetcuti's achievement.
I hope you was joking and that you did not mean what you said.

Wow... good thing you don't have a son, grandson, nephew or what have, you competing in the Olympics.....I can see what kind of support they would get from you!. At the end of the day Joe, Andrew is there competing in the Olympics and your... well , leaving comments.
WAY TO GO ANDREW !!!

I'm not saying that he did not do good, as he's the best ever for Malta, but his heat was of a very low level as they do this not to humiliate the athletes. As in heat 7 or 8 the last swimmer arrived at 49.55...which is more than 2 seconds faster than Andrew! Unfortunatly he did not make it to the semi finals but still hopefully this will attract more swimmers in Malta to practise this sport.
Jesmond Chetcuti

well done to the boy,but lets not exagerate with all these complements....his time was 37th ,so its not as if he missed the semis by a fraction, and by the way he was beaten by a fella from Albania and mighty Guam...our only hope in a medal ,is the other Chetcuti...the real one...

There is nothing quite like beating your personal best and setting a new national record and this is a good achievement but I'm sure Chetcuti is disappointed in not qualifying, as are we all, but happy at the same time that there was something acheived.
This will only make him excel in the future and who knows maybe a place in another final awaits.
Good luck for the future!
