Floriani, the Making of a Monument is the first book of its kind to be produced in Malta as it illustrates the whole process involved in the making of a monument.
The book is of interest to Melitensia collectors as well as to art lovers as it shows the process the artist follows through the course of his work
The book is actually about the making of the bronze monument honouring Pietro Paolo Floriani, the Italian enginner and architect who designed the fortification walls on the south side of Valletta and after whom Floriana is named.
The monument, the work of artist Chris Ebejer, was inaugurated in Floriana in April 2009.
“Many people admire such monuments but only few realise the workmanship, skill and technicalities involved to make such works of art.
“The aim of this publication is that through a set of photographs the reader is made aware of the different stages involved in the making of a monument,” said Mr Ebejer.
The book has an introduction by Carla Compagnoni, a descendant of Floriani himself.
Stephen Degorgio is responsible for the information regarding Floriani’s connection with the Order of St John on his arrival in Malta and how he was commissioned to design the new bastions outside the capital city.
The editor, Raymond Saliba made a study of monuments in Malta from Neolithic times to contemporary times stating the various reasons why the different monuments were made. In another section Mr Saliba makes a critical analysis of Mr Ebejer’s works.
The book is of interest to Melitensia collectors as well as to art lovers as it shows the process the artist follows through the course of his work.
