Poland’s jobless rate dipped to 12.4 per cent in June down from 12.6 per cent in May, continuing a downward trend, official data showed last Thursday.

At the end of June, there were 1.96 million job seekers in EU member Poland’s population of 38.2 million, data from Poland’s central statistical bureau said.

Analysts attribute the fall in unemployment to seasonal jobs, as well as the Euro 2012 football championships, which began on June 8 in Poland and ended on July 1 in Ukraine. The tournament proved a success in both former countries.

The figures continued the trend from earlier in the year: the jobless rate was 13.3 per cent in March, falling to 12.9 per cent in April.

On an annual comparison however, the June jobless rate inched up 0.2 points from 12.2 per cent in June 2011.

Poland joined the EU in 2004 but has yet to set a date for joining the troubled eurozone.
