While in most countries around the world, girl guides are celebrating more than 100 years of guiding, the 12th Birżebbuġa Girl Guides recently celebrated their 30th anniversary.

It was in 1982 when Anna Costigan, Commissioner for the South District, with the help of then parish priest Fr Paul Buttigieg, had arranged for the guides to start meeting in Birżebbuġa.

Weekly meetings started to be held and the unit quickly grew into a strong one, attracting more than 60 members. Pioneer guider Rita Agius was also instrumental in creating this unit.

Throughout these years, the girl guides made their presence felt in the local community by participating in environmental, health, sports and creative projects.

The guiders who formed part of the Birżebbuġa unit looked back with satisfaction when they saw their success in empowering the girls to be reliable citizens of the world.

Joining the guiders, guides and ex-guides for the celebrations were Marjoe Abela, Chief Commissioner of the Malta Girl Guides, Henriette Mallia, Commissioner for the South District, Lara Tonna, former Chief Commissioner, and chairperson for the Europe region and member of the board of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, and other distinguished guests from the council and parish.
