Rockestra’s new artistic director is promising that September’s rock spectacular will include special effects that have never been witnessed in Malta.
Speaking after the launch of this year’s Rockestra, Paul Borg Bonaci said the visuals and special effects used on stage would help “bring the orchestra to the people and bring the people to the orchestra”.
Now in its fourth year, Rockestra will see some of the island’s most popular rock and pop artistes performing at the MFCC in Ta’ Qali with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.
Ira Losco, Ivan Filletti, Mr Borg Bonaci (of Fakawi fame), Mikaela, Matt of Red Electrick, Glen Vella and Chiara will be among the big names starring with the 65-piece orchestra to raise money for the Malta Community Chest Fund.
Choreography will be provided by Felix Busuttil of Yada dancers as the orchestra rips popular classics by the likes of Pink Floyd, Adele, Santana and Zucchero.
This is now Mr Borg Bonaci’s fourth year participating in Rockestra but his first as artistic director.
“I’ve always shared ideas with (Rockestra musical director) Sigmund Mifsud and this year he said it’s time for us try them on stage,” Mr Borg Bonaci said.
“It’s a challenge as I’ve never done anything on this scale before – but I love a challenge.”
The Malta Community Chest Fund distributes funds to people in need and Mr Borg Bonaci thinks Rockestra showcases the best of the island.
“It brings together the different elements that make us Maltese. It shows our love for helping people but also our love of music and culture,” he said.
Rockestra will be held on September 15 from 8 p.m. under the patronage of President George Abela and Mrs Abela.
Tickets, priced at €15 (seated) or €10 (standing) (children €2) can be bought online or from the Malta Community Chest Fund in Valletta and San Anton, Attard (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and from the President’s Kitchen Garden (10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.).
