Mr.Xuerb, you said ".....In my opinion, education is the key. And a justice system that works, and swiftly".. not, a justice system that give out a punishment not a suspended sentence. Also, malta has become a country where drugs reign. Due to it's open borders, drugs are continously coming in by sea and air. ON top of that, we have illegal people breaking the law and coming in to malta by air and sea as well and they are not deported and allowed to stay here and break the law. That is what the maltese are seeing. But it's not the maltese who are comitting crime. WE have a large number of foreigners who are commiting crimes on maltese or their own people and they are let go. That is the state of malta today. ..

Crime has always existed, everywhere.
Crime is often specific to the place where it happens. For example black youth in London routinely stabbing (and killing) other black youths often in broad daylight. To compare crime in Malta to crime UK is pointless. Malta is smaller with a comparatively high crime rate of all sorts. Crime and drug abuse are both symptoms of unmanaged stress levels. And stress levels in Malta are as high as anywhere else. Stress can be understood and managed but unfortunately, many people are not amenable to learn how to survive without drugs. Some give in to crime to finance their addictions.
Different times and (religious) ethics in the past tempered crime to some extent. The morality of the past has been replaced by rampant Capitalism/Consumerism and some in the lower socio-economic scale succumb to drug abuse and crime. It does not help when some in the higher socio-economic scale commit crime just like anyone else. It creates a vicious circle.
In my opinion, education is the key. And a justice system that works, and swiftly. The old morality (based on church-going) did not work so going back to that would be a pointless exercise because, if it didn't work then, why should it work now? For a start, those who 'lead' us should set a good example and not spend time and energy squabbling among themselves for supremacy. And church people misbehaving most certainly do not reassure people thus undermining people's faith in their leaders, both spiritual and 'secular'.
Just food for thought.

A good source of weapons, one finds, most who come here in Paceville to get sloshed, put their mind at rest , by carrying a large penknife. The Police have the power to search, they should use it.

These weapons should be confiscated . Strict rules on possession should also be in force. If we do have a law prohibiting such arms then as usual it is not being observed

@ John Azzopardi "if you say so" - Do you have statistics showing a decline in violence in Malta? I fully agree with the above drug related thefts and other crimes including murder are on the increase. Like it or not a small percentage of all this does come from foreigners residing in Malta. Just check statistics issued by NGO's yearly who deal with such cases and support victims involved in such cases.

@ Joseph Saliba. of course he says so, and I think he is right, if you're a young guy and go to certain places you should know what goes on. most probably you agree to take away more power from the police, to stop and search.

To me it seems that there are to many knife crimes in Malta, and too many knife criminals out on suspended sentences!
