A 26-year-old pregnant woman from Somalia has been extradited from The Netherlands back to Malta after fleeing the island illegally.

Raho Adam Mohammed appeared in court yesterday seven months’ pregnant and pleaded guilty to leaving Malta without a passport when her asylum application was turned down.

The court heard police inspector Geoffrey Azzopardi explain the accused left Malta around two years ago but was caught in The Netherlands and sent back.

Through an interpreter, she told Magistrate Neville Camilleri that her asylum application had been turned down “leaving her no option but to leave Malta illegally”.

She had spent 15 months in detention.

Magistrate Camilleri suspended her six-month prison sentence for three years since she was heavily pregnant.
