A heroin addict was yesterday ordered to start a drug rehabilitation programme after he denied stealing a car and attempting to defraud its owners by forging a signature on a cheque found inside it.

Stefan Cutajar, 27, of Safi, pleaded not guilty to stealing an Opel Astra from Luqa industrial estate on Saturday and trying to defraud Raymond and Rita Borg.

The court heard Mr Cutajar found a chequebook in the car and wrote himself one for €721, but was apprehended before cashing it. Magistrate Neville Camilleri ordered him to be kept at the forensic ward at Mount Carmel Hospital.
