Suspended jail term for pregnant Somali

A 26-year-old pregnant woman from Somalia was this morning jailed six months suspended for three years after she pleaded for escaping Malta in 2010.

The woman, Raho Adam Mohammed, 26, was charged with leaving Malta without a passport.

The court heard police inspector Geoffrey Azzopardi explain how the accused, who is currently seven months pregnant, left Malta in about 2010 but was caught in The Netherlands, from where she was sent back to Malta.

Through her lawyer, Ms Mohammed said that her request for asylum had been denied so she could only leave Malta a passport.

Well said. As for your last question, only when the maltese authorities decide to stand up and be counted.

Absolutely right, Louise.

Furthermore, if the Dutch knew her asylum application had been denied (assuming they bothered to ask ) then why did they send her back to Malta ? - They should have just sent her back to Somalia instead of coming back here, pregnant, to receive a useless suspended sentence.

I suspect that the Dutch were following the rules of the EU Red Tape factory rather than the rules of common sense.

Mr A Arpa

Because our Nationalist government signed the Lisbon Treaty which gives authority to other EU countries to send back the illegal economic immigrants that enter Malta in the first place and obliges Malta to take them back.
