A 39-year-old Sicilian who lives in Rabat was today jailed for 18 months after he pleaded guilty to stealing money from the donation box at the Millennium Chapel.
Gianluca Torres claimed he stole the money because he needed to buy a cot for his baby. He said he went to the chapel to speak to Fr Hilary, but Fr Hilary had people and while he was waiting, he opened the donation box and helped himself. He was caught on CCTV.
Mr Torres told the court that he returned the money.
Police Inspector Luke Bonello said Mr Torres returned €75 but he had taken much more than that.
The Sicilian had various similar convictions in the past.
When the Magistrate asked him if he was sure that he wanted to plead guilty, he replied, through his interpreter, that what was important for him was having a clean conscience.
