The Young Speaker of the Year awards were recently presented at a memorial evening held by the English Speaking Board (ESB) in the main hall of the newly built junior school of the Archbishop’s Seminary, Tal- Virtu, Rabat.

Students from the Archbishop’s Seminary secondary school, St Aloysius’ College, Birkirkara, San Andrea school, L-Imselliet, and from St Dorothy’s junior school, Żebbuġ, Sacred Heart Convent School, Sliema, Thi Lakin, Attard, and Chiswick House School, San Ġwann, took part in the event.

In front of their school heads, tutors and parents, the students presented readings and poems that were part of their ESB assessment.

They were chosen from among hundreds of local students aged five to 15 who were assessed by ESB overseas examiners during two previous visits to the island this year.

The ESB was founded in England in 1953 and began in Malta in 1965. Its aim is to help young people to improve their speaking and listening skills and thereby improve their self-confidence.

The Young Speaker of the Year award was set up by ESB foundress Christabel Burniston in memory of the late Elizabeth Rees, who was a frequent examiner in Malta for many years and worked hard to promote ESB on the island.

Each student was presented with a certificate and a medal specially designed for the occasion.
