Cooler temperatures expected next week - Meteoweb
Feeling the heat. Photo: Chris Sant Fournier
The weather in Malta is expected to make a drastic change next week according to the Italian weather site Meteoweb.
The website said that the last weeks of uninterrupted sunshine and high temperature will come to an end on Monday with the +35°C temperatures of recent days going down to a maximum of +25/+26°C.
Malta, it said will also be “whipped” by a strong wind which will make the temperatures feel even lower.
Meteoweb says the weather will be mostly nice, stable and sunny, but cloudy with the possibility of isolated showers.

@Anthony Attard (21st July 18:59). Very well observed. You are right - people sitting on chairs outside their front-door, story-tellers drawing the neighbourhood kids, no cars to speak of, open front-doors (with keys in the lock in some localities). Or in those days, familji jgħidu ħames posti Rużarju (reciting the Rosary) either on the pavement or on the roof (after some juicy expletives because the carrier-pigeon didn't return, it-tajra (tal-karti) għebet, in-nemus giddmek, u l-ħobża żejt daru għalija n-nemel, eċċ. Doors were closed more because of the odd rat straying in. Otherwise, safe as houses as we say in UK. We had nothing, times were tough but we were happy because the pressures that exist now where hardly known back then. Progress is a double-edged sword. And the palju tat-tibna?! I remember our elderly neighbour across the street in her balcony telling my mother to douse her face with water and fan herself. Bliss!! |It is wonderful to see an elderly Maltese gentleman trying to survive the heat, according to Maltese devil-may-care fashion. Bless him!
The winters here in London are long but otherwise not too bad (the suburbs are more desolate and feel colder. The days are very short. One looks forward to the Summer. We had a fantastic three days in March and then again a few more sunny days about two months ago. Otherwise it has rained on and off non-stop. The forecast was rain until September but now we are told it will be a sizzling 29degrees as from tomorrow, Sunday 22nd. Fingers crossed.
The British Summer can be depressing (especially after a long winter). The heat in the city can be very oppressive. Planning anything that requires fine weather is impossible (this is Maltese thinking of course but British people are not so easily deterred. If one waited for fine weather one would end up doing nothing). I went to Brighton on a fine day two months ago. I have been waiting two months for a repeat. Maybe this coming week. But the city itself is good enough. Plenty of parks, the river, open spaces. Eating al fresco. One grabs it while it lasts. And then winter. And pubs in damp coats..
@ (Pule' Carmel 21st July 20:47). Carmel, are you thinking of Capodimonte?

Brilliant photograph.
With a slight modifications that depiction of human nature would be good enough to be scupted in the a famous Italian style, I forgot the name of the style, and could be " capo di stefano!" I cannot remember but the style depicts grown up and children in such a natural style.

I already noticed Jesmond, that is so true. But at least it will give us a much deserved break from the last weeks of endless torture and hell. God knows what August has in store for us?

The gentleman in the photo reminds me of my youth when sitting on the doorstep or on chairs on the pavement in summer was an everyday occurence especially on hot summer days. The few cars passing through our streets did not hinder neighbours enjoying cool evenings outside till late. Their many children used to enjoy themselves playing in the dimly lit streets or listening to nanna's stories.
Those were wonderful times with not much hassle, surely with less tension.
Leaving doors ajar or "fuq l-ant(r)i porta" was customary. It seems the gentleman still enjoys such a custom (at least till sunset!).
I wish him all the best.....sitting on his doorstep, enjoy listening to his favourite radio station, wearing casual clothes, with a bottle of cold water in one hand and "palju" in hand in the other.
Enjoy summer!

Rose tinted glasses are reat. However, there was also lots of garbage from the past such as raw sewage being dumped in the sae (remember Sliema Ferry, disgusting), Rubbish dumped in the countryside (Mahgtab), terrible treatment of children (and adults) who had mental issues, severe pollution from ancient vehicles, no monitoring of food hygene, rampant cruelty against animela, need I go on?

@C Cassar
Very true. One always remembers the past with nostalgia. The human brain shuts down on bad experiences. I am blessed with a very good memory however I tend to forget nasty experiences. I hated my days at school with a passion however I can only remember the funny anecdotes. I cannot remember much of the crappy ones.

In Toronto, when miraculousely the temps hit 10, the forecaster says, tomorrow it's going to be very warm. This year we had a horrible winter and a horrible early summers - the weather we had the last 6 weeks belongs to later July/early August. Repent people, the end is near.

@Peter Barbara,
I am 44 Peter, not sure if that make me young or?? This summer is terrible Peter and yes I have very good memories of horrid and hot summers like the ones in 1987, 1988 and oh boy the summer of 1998, the latter must have been as bad as this one. 2003 and 2012 (so far) very hot indeed.
Prior to 1987 if the temperature climbed to 34c we used to think we had a heatwave. During the summer of 2012, 35c seems to be the average when in actual fact 30c is the average mark. Other summers apart from the years I mentioned above were relatively comfortable, after all I do acknowledge that Malta is in the Med and not a Nordic country.But not when you have a summer like this one when temperatures refuse to budge below the 35c mark. When people start dying because of the heat then that is a fact itself to tell you how bad this summer has been. And I believe more to come in August?

Why is this 'news' (and from Euroweb !!!!!) ?.
Temperatures that are less warm than those experienced lately have been forecast by Malta's Meteorological Office since three or four days ago.

We Maltese have a mentality that since this came from a foreign source, then it tends to be better than local news... Same perception applies when for example we buy goods and services; "Ta' barra ahjar minn ta' Malta". Again, same philosophy can be seen for example; when we recruit employees at managerial positions in local companies. Many directors and managers nowadays, tend to be foreigners and not Maltese... mentalita' bazwija f'kelma ohra, dejjem hekk konna u dejjem hekk ser nibqghu!

@Joe Scerri
You must be unique man, is your blood full of Azzar????? The exception with this summer is (if you read the article properly) that we had uninterrupted blazing sun every single day since the middle of June with temperatures of 35c+
Summer is generally hot in Malta but in almost every summer you do get a respite after a week or so of high temperatures. This summer the temperatures even climbed above 40c and never went below the 35c mark for weeks on end (apart from the odd day). But then again you are one of those by the sounds of it who prefers to stay idle during the summer season and watch the world go by. Enjoy your idle days Joe Scerri!!!

Our Lady is listening finally to us. This summer is going to go down as the most horrid and hottest ever. I hope the wind is very strong to chase this horrid heat OUT of the Maltese islands. Would be good if the showers do materialise, actually even thunderstorms to drench the whole island. I hope that August does not go crazy like last month and this month, if only we have cloudy days with wind and rain and NO sun and NO heat.
Every single person who I bumped into, friends etc moaned about this summer and said it has never ever been this hot. Those who entertain this deadly summer are those who are lazy and just do nothing, stay in the air con or can afford to just sit by the pool. Life has to go on even during the summer season.

What' s so special about this summer. We have had this weather every summer for as long as I can remember, in my case these last forty years so not sure about your friends moaning. Who are you to judge people if they stay in the air con and can afford to sit by the pool?
Ah fire and brimstone will soon befall us.

You must be quite young, Kenneth, or else have a short memory if I may say so. People do tend to forget the years before and say the weather is the hottest so far. Well even up to ten years ago, I remember we used to have a heat wave every June with hot winds and temp. rising to 38-40 and then subsiding gradually in July and August. I remember because I like to run and take note of high temps in the diaries I keep every year and really hate it when it is so hot and worst of all when it is humid. Do not think that fifty years ago there was no humid summers - , and it was worse, because fans or a/c were unheard of. AND WE had to work at that time too my friend!
What I do notice though, is that the sun is getting hotter and hotter, even when we go abroad, we used to travel in summer to avoid the Maltese summer heat, now you have to be careful as it can get worse in some countries, where you cannot have the benefit of at least a swim in the sea.
