Roy Hodgson left his job at West Brom to take over the English national team.

Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp was regarded as the overwhelming favourite to replace Fabio Capello but in the end, the job went to the former Liverpool manager.

Redknapp is now without a job after being sacked by Tottenham. The Spurs were flying high in the Premier League but hit a negative patch during the period when their manager was being heavily linked with the England job before it was offered to Hodgson.

All the speculation about Redknapp’s future left a negative effect on the players who lost their focus.

Spurs did manage to claim fourth spot in the table last season but they were denied a coveted place in the Champions League by Chelsea.

The Blues finished outside the top four in the league but won the Champions League after beating Bayern Munich on penalties in the final.

Another link with Chelsea for Spurs is their new manager Andre Villas-Boas who last season led the side at Stamford Bridge for eight months before getting the sack.

Hodgson’s place at the Hawthorns has been filled by Steve Clarke who had never managed a club before but acted as no.2. His last post was at Liverpool.

Hodgson worked wonders at West Brom, especially in the early phase of the season as he had to make do with a patched-up defence because of injuries. Peter Odemwingie was the Baggies’ league top scorer with nine goals.

Tottenham had another positive campaign but little did they know that Chelsea would snatch their place in the Champions League.

Perhaps, more was expected of Gareth Bale who recently signed a new four-year contract at White Hart Lane.

In the Europa League, Spurs progressed to the group phase but lost at home to PAOK Salonica and failed to reach the KO stage.

In the domestic cups, they stumbled at the first hurdle in the League Cup, going down to Stoke in a penalty shoot-out away after a 0-0 draw. In the FA Cup, the Spurs went far before going down heavily (5-1) to eventual winners Chelsea in the semi-finals.

West Brom lost in the third round of the League Cup – 1-2 at Everton. In the FA Cup, they went down at the Hawthorns – 1-2 to Norwich in the fourth round.
