A 29-year-old Gambian immigrant yesterday admitted trying to escape from detention out of acute frustration after he found out that his wife and child were living with another man back home.

Suleiman Ba, who lives at Safi detention centre, stood in court in a torn shirt looking somewhat worse for wear.

Police Inspector Arthur Mercieca said the accused had told the police he had found out that his wife and child were living with another man in Gambia, and out of sheer frustration, he had tried to escape.

However, he had apologised for the escape bid, the inspector said.

Legal aid lawyer Simon Micallef Stafrace asked the court to consider Mr Ba’s situation and the fact that he was a first-time offender.

Magistrate Edwina Grima jailed him for six months.
