Newly-promoted Melita FC have started their preparations for the coming season. Under the guidance of team coach Martin Gregory, pre-season training has already started in time for their first ever match in the Premier League against Birkirkara next August.

Club President Paul Zammit has confirmed that the club is close to signing Malcolm Licari, who has already started training with the club. Portuguese player Rudi Alinho is back in the squad after a brief spell with Mosta and Gzira, and Spanish defender Sierre Camacho has been reconfirmed this year. Two other Spanish players are currently on trial with the club, Mr Zammit said.

The club has also appointed a new Nursery head coach, Franco Agius, who joins the club from Birkirkara.

Mr Zammit said that the club is constantly investing time and money to maintain and improve the already high standards the club has achieved at first team and nursery levels.

The club is currently in the process of upgrading its training facilities with the laying of new turf on their 11-a-side pitch providing excellent facilities mainly for the first team to train on and for the 400 or so boys who attend the Nursery for which registrations are currently open.

“It is important that we keep investing in the Nursery because that is the future of our success. We currently have a few excellent players who are coming through the nursery and who we hope will make it to the first team in the same way most of the current first team players made it themselves through the nursery and are now playing in Premier Division,” Mr Zammit said.

The seven-a-side pitch has also been completely resurfaced and the club is accepting bookings on 9999 1932.

To celebrate last season’s success, the club is organising a barbecue at the Cavalieri Hotel on July 26. For further information call 9999 9292 or email events@melitafc.com .
