Father back behind bars

A man charged with scalding his three-year-old son was yesterday back behind bars after being charged with threatening his former partner just seven days after being granted bail.

Andrea Camilleri, 29, of Luqa, had pleaded not guilty to grievously injuring the boy and slightly injuring his former partner, Sharon Fenech, who is four months’ pregnant. He was also charged with relapsing.

During the case the court heard how Ms Fenech was awoken by the screams of her son, Jesred, who was shouting at his father that the water coming from the shower was hot. Mr Camilleri was granted bail last week against a personal guarantee of €10,000 and a deposit of €1,000.

However, according to Police Inspector Jurgen Vella, no sooner had he been released from prison that he began to threaten Ms Fenech.

The threats continued up until yesterday morning and Mr Camilleri was arrested and charged with breaching bail.

Defence lawyer David Farrugia Sacco said that, although his client’s mobile phone might have been used, there was no concrete proof that he was the person who sent the threats.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli, however, remanded Mr Camilleri in prison.
