I understand that the Arriva fares are subsidised by the Maltese government and the fares for non-residents of Malta are higher than those of residents. Perhaps in order to reduce budget deficits, non-residents should also be charged more for other subsidised commodities such as water and electricity. I’m sure this will bring many more visitors to Malta.

Our 13-year-old cousin who is a resident of Malta, was also forced to pay the non-resident fare because he could not produce proof that he is a resident.

Since public transportation is subsidised in most countries, I was just wondering how many other countries charge visitors extra for using their public transport.

Please note that despite the extra cost, we were delighted to use the air-conditioned and comfortable Arriva buses on a hot summer day.
