Fewer visitors to Gozo

Fewer people crossed between Malta and Gozo in the second quarter of this year - possibly put off between the state of the roads on the sister island.

The NSO said that sea transport between Malta and Gozo registered decreases in vehicles, commuters and trips compared to the corresponding quarter of 2011.

The number of passengers on the ferries  decreased by 1.6 per cent, totalling 1,079,367 when compared to the corresponding period in 2011.

The number of vehicles carried by scheduled vessels went down by four per cent, totalling 274,123.

The highest number of commuters was recorded in June (367,140 or 34 per cent of the total for the quarter).

The number of trips in the period under review stood at 4,742, a decrease of 1.6 per cent over the corresponding period last year. The majority of trips took place in June - 1,610 - or 33.9 per cent of total trips for this quarter.

Sorry ta' Mr Buhagiar .Nahseb li ghandek zball kbir meta tghid li 'works will eventually stop'. Mela ma ndunajtx li biex saret il-main road tax-Xewkija to Victoria kissirna it-toroq kollha sekondarji tal-madwar Victoria? Ma baqax triq sekondarja wahda bhan- nies ghax ovvjament matul dawn ix-xhur kollha tghidx kemm ghaddew trakkijiet u traffiku iehor li ma kienux jifilhu ghalih dawn l-imbierka toroq! U issa x'ghandna? Frakass totsli organizzat perfettament min TM!!!

Gozo will never return to its full glory. Too much damage has been done to the environment in the name of progress. Hundreds of beautiful mature trees have been chopped down, secondary roads are rutted and potholed, there is dust and debris everywhere, more pollution thanks to the narrowing of the roads, slow moving traffic and much more. It may look like progress to many and the end result might even look pretty to the few but as far as usefulness is concerned there has been a deterioration. Thank you TM and the minister that heads it

I live on Gozo and I have got to say Mr Gouder, YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING about "most of the roads are in excellent state". The roads are a bloody disgrace to whomever is responsible for their infrastructure. I have encountered better farm tracks than the current state of Gozo roads, with the exception of those built under partnership with EU funds.
The current re-routing of all traffic onto the side roads and back streets has left them totally destroyed from the heavy construction lorries and plant. Routes change by the hour and delays and gridlock are the order of the day. My thoughts on your comment are this; if you are being rewarded for your comments then you need an increase, for your "spin" is truly magnificent.

sorry mr mizzi....but they just closed for the xewkija former lights down to the dairy factory.....they just dug 2 wide trenches from one side to the other of the newly almost ready road........its a pity because thats where problems start....while the rest of the road was rolled so many times ....these trenches will end just filled up......the result will be seen in a few months time.......take note ...one of them is at the bend near the gozo stadium !!!

apart from that you find some Gozitans that do not want you to park in front of their house, even if it is a legal parking bay.

its only a perception....we have them also in malta...many high end shops are rarely visited by maltese!!! also major supermarkets in gozo have very good prices almost on all items...with prices displayed!!!....then if you go `by the sea` you expect some increase...these guys pay rents the whole year and open only for three months!! simply ask or look for the prices..
