Maltese travelled out of the country 23,711 times in May as outbound tourism increased by 13 per cent compared to the previous year, according to the National Statistics Office.

The majority of outbound trips – which involve Maltese travelling abroad – were to EU countries with the main destinations being the UK and Italy.

In fact, only 3,216 of the trips were to non-EU countries. Still, the number of tourist trips towards non-EU destinations increased by 33 per cent when compared to May 2011.

There was also a 10 per cent rise in tourist trips to EU destinations.

The number of same-day visitors, who returned to Malta the day they left, stood at 4,106.

Outbound passengers between January and May were estimated at 109,555, up by three per cent when compared to last year, the NSO said.
