The Honorary Consular Corps presented a number of T-shirts to the NGO Mid-Dlam għad-Dawl. The shirts are to be given to inmates of the Corradino Correctional Facility.

In a brief address before making the presentation, Godwin Bencini, dean of the corps, said one of the most important duties of an honorary consul was to assist nationals of the country represented when these found themselves in situations of distress.

He explained that most honorary consuls at some time or another had a citizen of the country they represented arrested and kept in the facility. In such cases the honorary consul is obliged to provide assistance to the person arrested.

Mr Bencini said that the nationals represented by honorary consuls were foreigners, and they therefore had no families in Malta who could provide for their various needs.

With this in mind, the council of the Honorary Consular Corps in Malta decided to make a donation to Mid-Dlam għad-Dawl, an organisation which provides support to CCF inmates.

Following discussions with George Busuttil, president of the NGO, who identified the most important requirements, it was agreed that the donation would be in the form of T-shirts, which inmates use regularly.

The presentation was made in the office of the director, Correctional Services, in the presence of prison director Abraham Zammit.
