Over the past years we have had the Labour opposition condemning the government’s decision to have the power station run on heavy fuel oil, forcing the government to change that so that it will now run on gas, and to plan a cable link to the European grid, which is a good move.

But the decision to go for gas-fired boilers is a short-term solution, especially in view of the rising price of gas.

There is another option – namely to capture CO2 to reduce emission. Though this may sound good, one has to ask who is going to pay for storing, shipping and dumping our emissions in some deep underwater abyss on the other side of the world. Furthermore, we all know that the eco tax started on a small scale, yet has now escalated much more than we ever imagined.

So will our electricity bills in future include a CO2 emission tax? I don’t know. Capturing our CO2 may reduce our pollution levels, but it does not provide an answer to the energy crisis and the rising cost of fossil fuels.

So the way forward is alternative energy, with no emissions whatsoever or worries about the rising cost of fuel. This will reduce energy costs in the long run, while reducing emissions and ensuring energy supplies for the foreseeable future.

We should not only invest in solar energy; we must exploit wind and wave energy, even by creating offshore wind farms, for example off Bengħajsa or Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq.We must exploit every source of alternative and renewable energy available.

The public could also be encouraged to invest in wind farms. The possibilities are endless. It is within our power to create a cleaner, safer environment for generations to come.
