As part of the recently held fifth summer school in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at the University’s Msida campus, a first ‘mapping party’ was organised during which the participants collected information about the University and updated the Open Street Map data online.

This year the summer school comprised a mix of lectures and hands-on sessions on creating spatial data and how Global Positioning Systems (GPS) interface with GIS.

Participants received a one-year student licence of Esri’s Arc GIS 10 from Geosys Ltd, local distributors of Esri software products (www.esri.com).

The participants included research students, technical staff from utility companies and government agencies as well as foreign students .

The summer school was organised by the University of Malta’s Institute for Sustainable Development in collaboration with the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering of University College London (UCL) and Portsmouth University’s Department of Geography.
