I find Maltese people lovely, polite, and truly warm. So please don't take this the wrong way; but the moment you guys get behind a wheel you turn into something very scary. My first driving experience in Malta was pants pooping stuff. Roundabout behaviour is particularly frightening and like being flung into a pit of very 'bitey' animals.

Here we go, that is the famous spin corner, so many cars seen doing a 180 degree spin when it has just started to drizzle. Now with this spill, even more accidents should occur and when I complained a year ago, it all fell on deaf ears. The 3 monkeys live very strong in our civil departments and our politicians.

@ Mark Fenech
So the fault was the driver's because he was driving with an unsecure load - it should have been chained down with proper lever load binders to avoid any movement.
And since the driver knew his load was not secure he should have at least driven with greater care.

'And since the driver knew his load was not secure he should ...' not have driven the vehicle at all.

Why every day a car or a heavy car is being over turned in the last three weaks?
Mr Tony Gatt

It must be the heat!

the reason why the van toppled is because the driver had a 3000 L tank at the back full of water, and when the driver pressed the brakes in the bend, the tank slid from one side to the other, causing a large momentum on one side, hence it turned over. This coming from someone who was on the scene!

Who says that we do not have first class drivers in Malta?

Is it "toppling over" season again?
"the driver appeared shocked" - well he would be a bit surprised, wouldn't he, especially as he should now be expecting a dangerous driving charge. And before you all leap to the "how do you know, why don't you move off somewhere else, accidents happen" crap - vehicles this big do not "topple over" on their own !!

The road is at fault !!!!!!

an average of 1500 trucks drive round that bend every day , one topples over on the bend so how can that possibly be the road at fault and not the truck or its driver ???

Wonder if the new arriva buses are discharging some of their fuel or oil during their turning bend ? If this might be the case, then no wonder that trucks are toppled at this dangerous bend...This could be the real case as the main reason.

I don't want to jump to conclusions, but it toppled whilst going round the bend. Work out the physics and its quite simple why it did topple over.

suspension failure on a curve can also be a cause you know...
Jon Fenech
Jul 14th 2012, 11:07
so now I guess the curve has oil and diesel all over the tarmac...

Ideally, all commercially registered vehicles would be equipped with tamper proof speed recorders.
At the very least, we will not have the usual silly comment in the news "ghal xi raguni tilef il-kontroll...."

should have them fitted to cars as well !
Michael Zarb
Jul 14th 2012, 16:47
Steven, yes they should be fitted on cars - but in reverse order. The moment you spend too long driving at, say 10 below speed limit, you automatically get salmon slapped across the face from the device!!!!

Has anyone else noticed that the hotter the weather, the more erratic the driving?
Mr Tony Gatt
Jul 14th 2012, 17:11
Stands to reason- the expression 'hot under the collar' is apt if your car has no a/c.

Yes most defintily the Maltese way of life. Very erratic and high blood pressure.
