The PL's electoral programme will be built on realistic proposals that would form a roadmap for economic growth, rather than on a wishlist of grand proposals which could not be implemented, Opposition leader Joseph Muscat said today.

Speaking during a meeting with the General Workers' Union during which union officials presented their proposals for the political parties' electoral manifestos, Dr Muscat said that Labour would go for sustainable economic growth through which the deficit could be reduced.

The reduction in the deficit, he said, did not come about with cuts in the social sector. The social structure had to be strengthened and sustained and there were initiatives that could be taken to strengthen workers' rights.

Dr Muscat insisted that the Labour Party did not believe that the pensionable age e should go up.
