Government Whip David Agius heralded a “new way of doing politics” yesterday as he became the first MP to launch his own mobile phone and tablet application.
Constituents of Mr Agius can now keep abreast of his daily schedule, follow the projects and campaigns he supports and even make an appointment with him using the free David Agius Malta app.
Speaking at a press conference at Hugo’s Lounge in Paceville, the trailblazing MP said the app was a good way for him to connect with younger, tech-savvy voters.
“I can now be reached at the touch of a button,” he said.
Mr Agius was elected to Parliament for the 11th district, which includes Mosta, Attard and Balzan.
“There are lots of students and young people living in my area and this app will make it easier for them to contact me and arrange meetings,” he said.
The app is available for free download for Apple, Android and Blackberry devices from the iTunes, Google Play and HTML5 market places.
“It’s very easy to download and use,” Mr Agius said, as he gave The Times a demonstration on his iPad.
Standout features include a comments board, notifications of Mr Agius’ activities and a section for users to share photos of their meetings with the MP.
He hopes other Nationalist MPs will follow his example by embracing modern technology and making themselves more accessible to the people they serve.
Resources Minister George Pullicino and backbencher Francis Zammit Dimech are both in the process of developing their own apps with Swieqi-based Sassy Apps, the same company Mr Agius used.
Sassy Apps began developing the David Agius app last March and Mr Agius said he had plenty of input into the design and content.
Hugo’s and The Villa also launched apps at yesterday’s press conference.
