163 thefts of cars and 466 burglaries from homes were reported in the first half of this year, the Prime Minster said in reply to parliamentary questions. The burglaries included 109 cases where the stolen items were actually outside the homes, and 59 cases where the tenements were not occupied.

Dr Gonzi also told Labour MP Noel Farrugia that 486 cases of domestic violence were reported in the first six months of this year along with 131 cases of violence against elderly persons.

There were 303 thefts from commercial establishments during the same period, of which 81 were to the detriment of staff or clients.
