Three cheers for Maltapost

While on holiday in Malta last week I read a letter in The Times entitled The Ups And Downs Of The Postal Service. Two years ago I was very unimpressed when postcards sent back to friends in England took 10 days to arrive and the letter reminded me of that experience.

To see if the situation had improved, on July 4, I posted two cards at a postbox in Sliema, one to England and one to Brisbane, Australia. Can you imagine my surprise when I was told that the card posted to England arrived safely at the recipient’s address on the morning of July 6?

So let’s have three cheers for Maltapost for an incredible service. Fantastic!

Digressing, since my last visit in 2010 I am delighted to see that those two rusting hulks that blighted the seascape in Sliema Creek for years have at last been removed. What an improvement. Malta is my favourite island and I like to see it posper. But there again maybe I am a little biased – I was born in Mtarfa at the David Bruce Military Hospital. I will be back to see the people of Malta again soon, I promise.

Hello Carmel
No, simply being born in Malta does not make me a Maltese citizen. However I am going to explore the possibility of obtaining a Maltese passport and thus having dual British/Maltese nationality. As an author and publisher i intend to spend much more time in Malta in future. My publishers, Shaffron Publishing of York, will be instigating a Short Story competition for schoolchildren in Malta very soon.

Having had long experience of the british postal service, I would say that it is far from perfect. Postal service to and from the UK is now very good both letter and packets, usually taking a couple of days either way. I have sent quite a few trackable packets over the last few months and apart from one, have all left Malta the same day.

I suppose that if the card took two weeks to arrive to its destination in England you would have promptly blamed Maltapost for the delay?

DEAR ANGUS,

What gives you the right to suppose anything about me ?Anyone else also note that no mention was made of when the card arrived in Australia or if that delivery was excessively delayed would that then be the fault of the Aussie postal service?Postal delivery is a collective effort but ultimately the postal service of the final destination should, and will, get the praise or brick bats.
