Although smoking in restaurants in Malta is prohibited, non-smokers dining in some open-air restaurants cannot enjoy their meal because smoking patrons selfishly light up.

Also, the owners of such restaurants do not seem to care as long as they get the business. We hear much about the health hazards caused by smoking, and also the harm caused by passive smoking, yet this problem is not being addressed with enough determination.

I am not suggesting that smoking in open-air restaurants should be banned, but surely this problem could be solved by segregating smokers from non-smoking patrons, as some restaurants have done.

Probably the time has come for the non-smoking public to ban the uncaring restaurants.
