This one-metre sculpture called Asylum forms part of a contemporary art exhibition by Emanuel Bonnici displayed at the new Maltese Embassy in Rue d’ Artois, Paris, until July 15. The exhibition, called Metamorphosis, meditates on culture and identity issues, and the work plays on juxtapositions of Maltese iconic imagery. Seen here, the Knight’s sentry box, gardjola, is fused with a 20th century symbol of British communication – a red telephone box, while the Neolithic statue of the fertility goddess is fused with a hamburger, metaphorically used as a symbol of the McDonaldisation of contemporary life.
