Passenger cabins for Barrakka lift delivered
The two cabins for the new Barrakka lift have been delivered as work on the €2.5 million project enters its final phase.
Workers are completing the 53-metre high free-standing structure and have started work on the machine room at the top.
Work is due shortly on the honey-coloured aluminium mesh which will cover the structure to blend in with the limestone of the bastions and on the bridge connecting it to the Upper Barrakka.
The lift is due to be completed in the autumn. Each panoramic cabin will be able to carry 21 passengers. The two cabins will be able to carry up to 800 passengers per hour.
The work started in the second half of last year.

This project will re-introduce a vital link from Lascaris Wharf to the heart of Valletta. It will maxamise on the few hours that cruise liner passengers spend in our Islands amd may also be an alternative method of travel for people from the 3 cities to Valletta.
A good initiative, well done!!

I think this would be an entertaining addition and a great photo opportunity for the cruise ship passengers to experience - well done!

I am looking forward to ride this lift . As a kid in the fifties, my friends and I from Lyceum came here just to ride the ancient lift for fun. We had no radios, or cell phones, or pocket money so this was one thing we did for fun.The other was to get together with school girls on the ramparts, just to chat.

A moving stairway would have made a lot more sense.
What use will 800 people be when there are 2 or 3 liners in for the day?.

How quickly things get done when it is for the benefit of the rulers - new parliament, new city gate, lift at Barrakka, nothing is too good for our politicians it seems and the place they need to show and strutt their stuff on the international scene.
Meanwhile, the rest of the country has been left languishing - the Cirkewwa project for starters and other half baked and half finished or promised to be done projects that directly affected the qualilty of life of the Maltese people always have big hiccups and wind up on the back burners for decades.

I wonder if you have ever seen the look on cruise-liner passengers' faces when they attempt to take a stroll in the city in summer and they have to take those stairs from Victoria Gate to Merchant Street?
This lift was very much needed as the elder passengers and other passengers with any disabilities will now benefit from an easier access to the city.
The only setback for this project is that as always it has taken far too long to complete. Government projects however have sped up recently due to the fear of an early election. The Government will want to show off his finished projects in time to lure the prospective voters... Maybe we should change the constitution and have an election every 3 years, this will keep all Governments in check ;)

I am looking forward to going on this lift when I return to Malta in the autumn. I vaguely remember my father taking me up on the original lift many years ago.

I just cannot believe it. No socialist has anything to say. This is the first stumping and there will be more to follow. By the time the Valletta embellishment projects are ready, the Malta Labour Party will be hit for six. By the time the General Elections are upon us, Joseph will be out for a duck. For those who do not know the game of cricket... the Malta Labour Party is in for a hiding of note.

It never ceases to amaze me that in Malta everything is politicised. Make the most of it- get the money for projects before the EU goes broke.
