Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi met with nine migrant-focused NGOs yesterday as the fallout following the death of Mamadou Kamara while in custody continued.

The two sides discussed ways in which the asylum procedure could be improved in a meeting that a spokesman for Dr Gonzi described as “open, frank and cordial”.

Both sides agreed on the need to further discuss existing policies and practices, the spokesman added.

NGO sources were reluctant to divulge much information on the meeting, saying simply it was a positive step and they looked forward to more constructive discussion in the future.
